Description
I was a little skeptical about playing Bioshock Infinite, from the previews I thought I'd miss the horror/macabre aspect of 1&2 and I felt the iconography was lost in character design when the Little Sister / Big Daddy duo were replaced by some awfully pretty people. I was like "Great, it's going to be some fluffy save-the-girl/probable-love-interest crap..."Happily, I was proven wrong. For starters I didn't miss the horror at all because this is probably the most beautiful game I've ever played as far as real-time graphics go. Just walking through Columbia in the first couple of chapters made me want to sit there and take screenshots for a few minutes. As the game progresses the horror aspect does return and the Dewitt/Elizabeth dynamic develop plenty of character. Finally if you're familiar with the story, although rushed it's pretty stellar. :]
I'm also a big fan of run-and-gun FPS games, so the skyline in the battle system felt pretty baller, added with the Charge Vigor the whole thing was like rush down city! This with the fact that re-positioning was so easy I don't know why anyone would carry anything other than a Sniper/Shotgun... Although I only blitzed through the game on Hard, haven't poked at 1999-mode yet.

Holy shit, that drawing is just so beautiful that i only can describe it with these words: GORGEOUS EYECANDY. And i also love the little tear running from Elizabeths left eye and the different lighting effects from both sides of the tear.

I agree, Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us were the two best written stories as far as games go this year. Β To say anything less of them is completely wrong says pretty much everyone else that played those two.

After getting so immersed in the story and involved with Elizabeth and Booker and knowing why shes crying. (even though its been months since I beat it) It makes it hard to look at the expression on her face and not kinda tear up a bit. That being said, amazing job! :'D

i too loved Bioshock Infinite, i have been a big Bioshock fan since the first game. However, some things in this game did bother me.Β
One thing that bothered me was that I would have liked to have seen more open areas.Β I loved the first few levels of the game especially the part where you were fighting along the rooftops and streets. I loved how you would go along the skyline and there was nothing but sky beneath you. I was hoping that the game would be more like that, I know that the skylines areΒ everywhere, but for the most part they are close to the street level or a second floor landing, one of the exceptions being the zeppelin take-down in Finkton.
Another thing that bothered me was the lack of civilians in the later parts of the game, i liked being in a crowded area, like the fairgrounds and Battleship Bay, i feel that the crowds made everything more casual, you weren't a lone character facing off against enemies, you were just another person walking around a city.Β
Soldier's Field was a good level, it was big and spacious and made excellent use of the sky lines. The only issue i had was that it was empty. I know its because it took place during the night and the place was closed, but the game starts off on the day that celebrates the Columbia's founding. I would have liked to have seen more festivities and fireworks and people. Why wouldn't a place like Soldier's Field be open?

Yea, they killed open-immersion a lot in favor of a linear storytelling. Not that it was necessarily a bad thing to me?
The skylines... I think it was mostly there for repositioning and to get rid of squishy enemies quickly, not so much for constant aerial combat or travel. Although I definitely see the appeal of emphasis on aerial combat.
And yea, the lack of civilians I think just caters to free-roam and open-immersion games more (Assassins Creed, Fallout, etc.) Although in later chapters it would make little sense for civilians roaming around the streets with a revolution and all that going on.

To be honest I was expecting it to be less linear, the first demo that came out (the on with Saltonstall) showed less linear gameplay and that really appealed to me. I was hoping that the areas would be more segmented, making more use of clustered platforms rather than large platforms, kind of like what they did in the first level, when you exit the church and you see the platforms come together and connect with bridges.

I thought most of the game was good, but the whole thing felt unfinished and a little bit rushed. Β A lot of things that were promised to be in the game have been left out or you only get to see them once. Β

While this piece is gorgeous it highlights the fundamental flaw in the game's character/narrative for me, namely that it starts as one kind of story and then becomes something that, again for me, felt like it belonged to another game. Personally I would chalk it up to a massive rewrite of the game's story and character dynamics/relationship halfway through production. While a visually stunning title with rich world building and lore the entire thing really fell apart around the middle (can't be specific without going into spoilers).Β
Suffice to say the above art piece is a better interpretation of how things might have been different for the game in more ways than one. I had hoped they would avoid the melancholy of Bioshock 2 but, sadly, Levine chose to go the way he did. I don't regret purchasing the game, but it did leave me incredibly disappointed. It could have been something really amazing and moving; instead it just felt like it strove for such complexity it couldn't really figure out what it wanted to be at the end so it just went for 'Beat 'em over the head with tragedy and ambiguity.'

I thought that's what made it great, it starts off as a romanticized fluff piece and then evolves into something so much better. It grabs idealized beauty by the throat and shakes it violently into reality.

I would disagree with your use of "better", however my views are my own and I have no compulsion to sway anyone's opinion on the matter. I will say that, from my experience, the only thing which was "violently shaken" was my belief that Ken Levine was capable of writing/directing a game which concluded in any sensical and satisfactory capacity for a second time. He built a love story then decided he wanted to strive for something more "complex" than allowed his narrative and character pathos and chemistry to fall apart until it only mimicked complexity but instead proved more cliche with his "twist" than what he seemed to have wanted to avoid in the first place. But, again, that's just my disappointed standpoint.

Well yea, I wasn't using "better" objectively there.
Frankly, I find love stories boring.
Infinite was never a "love story", maybe the premise suggested the idea of one but the characters, plot and storytelling quickly evolved and morphed into something different that proved otherwise. (Which again, is a running theme of the game; the ugly side of idealization.)Β
It truly sounds like that the idea of the pathos, narrative and chemistry "falling apart" is all in your head. All I can see is that they all gradually changed and shifted into something you didn't expect or wanted it to be.
Expectations are a dangerous bias :]

I'm actually echoing sentiments shared by others here and abroad; so, no, it's not "all in my head." But like I said this isn't me planting my flag trying to get people to see things my way. So, agree to disagree. I still think you created a gorgeous piece of art that certainly paints a beautiful portrait of a beautiful character.Β

Quirkilicious In reply to RogueWriter3201 [2013-09-11 06:38:21 +0000 UTC]
"All in your head(s)" then.Β I'm sure a lot of people wanted a romance.Β
Doesn't really change my point that you all had expectations for a type of story that was simply not meant to be. When it changed into something different you all rejected it, chalking it up to things "falling apart" or being "unsatisfying"
I'm just saying preference doesn't diminish quality from an objective standpoint, and it's bias to pretend it does.
