Okay let's get the big questions out of the way first.

Q: Is this game any good?
A: Yes.

Q: Is it worth full price?
A: No.

Now, onto the rest of the review.

I think we're witnessing the death of AAA Gaming in it's current form. Games that are hyped to the Heavens, but have our expectations slammed so far into the ground they hit the earth's core upon release. Companies are becoming greedy, lazy and have nothing but contempt for their general audience... Just wait till we get to Andromeda. It really shows you how far big name companies have fallen from grace in recent years. I mean one is a comic book giant that is universally despised by nerds and normies alike for their politics, while the other is a legend of gaming that has become the subject of ridicule for their complete and utter laziness.

Ha! No wonder these two get along so well!

Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite
is the 4th installment to what is quite possibly the greatest video game crossover of all time, and something of a franchise reboot that nobody was asking for! Also a lightning rod of controversy if you happen to like Wolverine or any other character with movie rights owned by 20th Century Fox, but we'll get to that in a minute.

I will defend Marvel Vs Capcom 3 to the bitter end because beyond an alleged "lack of characters" it was full of personality, charm and was a blast to play with friends. However this game (in its current form) makes MVC3 look like a fucking Smash Bros game in comparison. I want it to be known for the record that any negative views I have of this game is NOT due to "a certain game involving a beloved anime franchise" coming out next year or to simply jump on a hate bandwagon, because I have a personal hatred for "Angry Youtube Reviewers" and the mindless mob mentality. No, any critisisms or hatred I blast this title with is out of complete disappointment at a game that was one of the soul reasons I wanted a PS4 in the first place, only to be given a phoned in title that's somehow more sloppily put together than Street Fighter V.

From the moment you boot this game up, you're instantly greeted with said laziness. A big charm about these crossover titles are the flashy intro animations, complete with rock or J-Pop themes blasting into your ear drums to get you pumped. Here? Just a generic title screen and elevator music. You're not making it easy for me to like you are you, MVCI? Also considering this game needs to install its content upon your first boot up doesn't help either. So I hope you like playing 2 on 2 in a bland white room. Cus it's going to take awhile for other stages and even the fucking story mode to be installed.

Not a thrilling way to spend a Birthday, is it? (At time of writing)

I am happy to report the gameplay of MVCI is worthy of the Marvel legacy and was very entertaining to play. While I miss the 3v3 design of previous games, going back to the original 2v2 formula still works to keep the frantic action up to a 10. The returning characters from MVC3 handle pretty much how I remembered them and that's perfect. They didn't screw with their movesets all that much so I was able to slip back into their shoes comfortably. It did feel that some characters did more damage than the others or were overpowered (Ultron Sigma) while some barely did any damage at all (Frank West) but I can easily toggle the settings in the options menu if this continues to annoy me.

The new mechanic replacing X-Factor from the previous entry is the Infinity Stone system - each of the six stones can be activated with the press of a button to varying effects, allowing you to create crazy combinations that suit your playstyle and character choices. Aside from the basic "Surge" each stone has, they have a "Storm" option you can use after your Infinity Stone meter charges enough a la Street Fighter 4. My favorite of that effects belongs to the Mind Stone, which super charges your hyper combo meter - very useful against the final boss of Arcade Mode as I feel said meter fills up much slower compared to previous entries.

With all that being said, I feel this is a much more interesting addition compared to other power up mechanics like the one in Street Fighter X Tekken. The smaller non-meter effects range from speedy dashes, health regen, closing the gap between you and your opponent, etc. As I said before, it really opens up the floodgates for a host of new strategies that suit everyone's individual playstyles.

The main thing you should take away about MVCI is that the game is fun to play, the action is frantic and will no doubt be a lot of fun for pissing about with your friends. The main thing I love about this game is the much needed attention given to the Mega Man X series. A version of Mega Man many of us have missed since his last proper outing, Mega Man X: Command Mission. While there are some missteps (will get to that in the story section) this is one of the best incarnations of X to date. His voice, behaviour and overall design are bygod perfect. IF a Mega Man X9 ever graces our presence, just use this character model and I'm good! Though if I must critique something about him, I would have preferred his X4 theme over reusing the Highway theme from X1 yet again.

Sadly, that is where our main positives end. Now to delve into the negatives, which is what I suspect is the only reason you're reading this... Or if you like what I have to say, then thank you.

Let's start with the character roster. I know there is DLC coming but that in itself is a problem. Considering the DLC is announced BEFORE the game was released. This is a trend I've come to detest with modern fighting games, in that they'll create 6-9 new characters for the game but will sell you them later on. If these fighters are midway in development then I don't see why they can't delay the game until they're complete. Hell, if they're ready then just put them in the bloody game instead of making us pay for them later at an extortionate price! Make them unlockable fighters in a later update or ANYTHING instead of these "IOU more content" messages! It's pretty jaring to see the likes of Black Panther, Monster Hunter or Sigma in the story mode, but it'll cost you £5 a pop to actually play as them. At least MvC3's roster was all there from the start!.... minus the controversy surrounding Jill and Shuma Gorath but this mess overshadows that by a long shot.

It will come as no surprise that this is the weakest roster in the franchises entire run. While we have some much needed additions such as X, Jedah and Ultron as well as the expected veterans like Ryu, Chris Redfield, Spider-Man and more, we also have some strange Z-List characters like Gamorra and Rocket Raccoon. If it weren't obvious, the theme for the Marvel side of the cast is "If they're not in the MCU, they're not gonna be in here!" That being said, this brings us to the main controversy.

While I've seen a lot of fair and valid critiques aimed at this game, I do have to jump to Capcom's defense on one issue. Far too many people blame Capcom alone for Marvel's poor excuse for a roster. I didn't realize you could buy comic book companies with a shit ton of debt! If you fail to see how Marvel should be held equally responsible for this game's faults then your bias is showing and it's not pretty. Marvel chose this roster specifically as a means to promote the MCU and as an erect middle finger to 20th Century Fox. Which appears to be a tiny middle finger at that. Given the abysmal debut of the Inhumans TV series. Earth to Marvel Comics - The people who love the Marvel Vs Capcom series are FIGHTING GAME FANS! Not the mainstream crowd who still queue up to view your increasingly unwatchable movies. These people have followed the series for years and perfected the moveset for the likes of Magneto or Psylocke, yet do you think they'll be queing up to play this game when you exclude their go to characters in favor of Carl Manvers or Granola? Fuck no! Gonna quote a friend of mine on the roster. "We get it, The Mouse doesn't want to write a check to the houses Bart and Crash Bandicoot built. It doesn't mean anyone who's played the games in the past should forget about it."

What baffles me about this pro MCU roster is the exclusion of the likes of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Falcon, Ant-Man, Punisher and that douchebag played by Chris Pratt. Way to have an agenda with your roster but fail to include the characters people might have given a shit about! Don't get me wrong, Capcom take full responsibility for the exclusion of the likes of Wesker, Phoenix Wright or Falcon from Power Stone, but blaming them for the Marvel side is plain bullshit. There is at least one positive. None of their SJW characters are here. Thank fucking Christ for that!

I guess all that's left to talk about is the games story mode..... Oh boy.
(SPOILER ALERT)

I'm just gonna leave this here.

"Infinite's story mode script was penned by writer Paul Gardner, with oversight from Rosemann and Marvel's gaming division."

Now you know who to blame for this awful story. I know that may seem like a trival thing to bring up, but this story is so fucking bad that I HAD to know who wrote this crap and how could they get so many things wrong! Sure enough my suspicions were correct in that he's a Marvel writer. Even Capcom couldn't make a story this bad. I'm not gonna go over every single detail, but I need to address a few key problems... Because I'm a www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRsPhe…

The story makes clumsy refferences to STRIDER, Mega Man X5, Resident Evil 3, Dead Rising, The Avengers and Civil War, because god forbid we go a day without ANOTHER Captain America vs. Iron Man scenario, am I right? A major issue with the story is that it has no beginning. Also the references clash with the source material. One of the locations in the game is A.I.M.Brella, and implies the Umbrella Corporation are up to their old tricks. Yet the game uses the RE5 incarnation of Chris Redfield, which would imply that Umbrella no longer exists.

Whoops.

When I played the demo back in June, I said to myself "This is probably a scene that happens near the middle of the game's story!" However playing the final product in question, I was confronted with the sad truth that this WAS the beginning of the game's story. When I say it has no beginning, I mean we never see these characters meet for the first time or the manner of them teaming up. Sure you get the origin for the Convergence near THE END OF THE FUCKING GAME, which just feels like it was pulled out of the writer's arse, yet seeing our heroes form their alliance wasn't important enough to include at all. What did the game make time for? Nearly every character making cringe enducing jokes that are about on par with this.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF0Hav…

I would pay someone 1000 Bison Dollars to upload all the cutscenes to Youtube, but insert a sitcom laugh track everytime someone makes an awful joke. Mega Man X is officially the BEST character in the entire game because he barely says anything, and when he does it doesn't make me want to hire an assassin to murder Paul Gardner! Gosh, if only one of the parties involved was a COMIC BOOK COMPANY, that could fill in these gaps with a tie in comic. Sadly, whatever God you pray/or don't pray to clearly hates us! Because all we got are some pretty terrible variant covers for shitty Marvel Comics nobody is reading anyway! THAT would have solved these plot issues.

My point being - This story raises questions but never answers them. Such as....

How does Thanos know who Doctor Light is? Never answered.
How did Jedah Dohma arrive in the Marvel Universe? He never says.
How does Jedah know what the Infinity Stones are? See previous answer.
Why does Jedah need Lady Death's help? Never addressed properly.
What was Jedah and Lady Death's grand plan? Never showcased.
How did the Reality Stone end up in the Capcom Universe? Never explained.
How did Grand Master Meio reprogram Zero? Never explained.
How is Nemesis back from the dead? Never resolved.
Why is everyone on a first name basis with each other? Your guess is as good as mine.
How the fuck did Ultron Sigma manage to beat Odin, THE FUCKING ALLFATHER? Never addressed.
Where did Jedah and M.O.D.O.K. get a Symbiote? Dunno.
Why is Jedah working against Ultron Sigma? He never says.
What was the actual point of Dormammu and Firebrand even being here? You get the idea.
Why didn't Monster Hunter or Black Panther aid the heroes? Cus they're DLC.

Now to unleash a full on nerd rage and to prove to you why this story doesn't understand the Capcom roster.

The Sigma Virus.

For those of you who have never played the Mega Man X series, here's a brief summary of this plot device. The Sigma Virus infects Reploids and machines within the world of 21XX, turning the otherwise peaceful Reploids into psychotic killing machines which are then subsquently subdued by Maverick Hunters such as X or Zero. Notice how I said it only affects machine life, and not organic life. The Sigma Virus in this game however, does whatever the writer wants it to do. Paticularly when it infects Thor: Prince of Asgard. Thor (as established in the comics and in Avengers: Earth's Mightest Heroes) cannot be poisoned or contract human made viruses. Now you could make the arguement that "Well Ultron Sigma is using the Infinity Stones to amplify the virus' power!" but even then you'd be stretching farther than Mr. Fantastic (I wonder if he'll be DLC too? Hopefully not.)

In other words. It is Bollocks and Poppycock!

I fucking hate maguffins for they tend to serve as the writers "get out of shit free card!" when they write themselves into a corner. Sonic has the Chaos Emeralds, DBZ had the Dragonballs, Metal Gear has Nanomachines, Resident Evil has Viruses and Marvel has the Easter Eg-I mean The Infinity Stones. To me at least, it feels like the writer was reaching by saying "Infinity Stones, son!" So what we have here is a virus that can infect ANYTHING and slowly turns the host into a mindless zombie to do Ultron Sigma's bidding. So it's the Sigma Virus in name, but acts more like the T-Virus? www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O8J2l…

"Paul Gardner, I would have words with thee!"

Adding to this lunacy would be that Zero, the originator of the Maverick Virus also cannot be infected with the Sigma Virus. Infact, in Mega Man X5, it was established that exposure to the Virus only makes him stronger. So if Zero was being infected by an Infinity Stone powered Sigma Virus, that would make him the strongest being in both universes. This mother fucker would be able to go toe to toe with Superman and make him his bitch by dinner time!

You also get the impression the Capcom roster are just side characters while The Avengers hoover up all the screen time. While Rocket and Granola are having a pointless heart to heart, you can see X and Zero in the background having a chat. I'd rather be listening to their conversation thank you. This is even reflected with the little to no screen time Sigma was given. Ultron and Darksied get a great deal of exposure and exposition, while Sigma only has 2 scenes and 7 lines of diologue.

Sounds fair, doesn't it?

What should have happened was Sigma plays Ultron right from the start. Being the more cunning of the two, he'd manipulate Ultron with the Sigma Virus and betray him when the time comes. Yet instead we get the two robots entering a same circuit relationship, followed by the standard "let's fuse two villains to make a big scary final boss!" Cus that idea worked SOOOOO well in Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe now didn't it? There was a sub plot regarding Lady Death and Jedah, but after their brief exchange and the post credits scene, we never get a clear answer beyond "We need to justify the crossover!"

The writing is the usual brand of cringe inducing awfulness I associate with the MCU these days. I mean, some jokes do hit their target, but most of the time it's just some putrid shit that belongs on the cutting room floor. Mainly when it's clumsy references to a franchise.

Chun Li: I swear we'll....
Black Panther: What? "Avenge them?"
Chun Li: No. Bring them to "Justice."
(Even Chun Li doesn't want to be in this game)

Yet, THIS is the best of the "jokes."

Thor: The dead might live again.
Chris: Yeah, 'cause that always works out great.

Oh I could go on, believe me I could go on. But this review is long enough as it is. So let's wrap this up shall we?

Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite is a prime example of why you need to keep your expectations low for everything. Sure the gameplay is solid and worthy of a purchase, it's just everything else that prevents it from being a full priced purchase on day 1. I'd suggest waiting for a price drop, all the DLC to be released or of course waiting for the inevitable ULTIMATE edition 6 months from now.

It's better than Street Figther V, but it's lack of content keeps it from being in the same company as "game we've agreed not to reference in this review." With shit like this, Secret Empire, America Chavez and their Netflix/TV shows underperforming, it's nice to see Marvel getting the karma they've been long overdue for some time now. Maybe you should try playing nice with 20th Century Fox instead of being so hostile towards them. Maybe then we'll get Wolverine and Deadpool as DLC.

UPDATE.
So I recently downloaded all the DLC characters. Let me sum each as simply as possible.

Sigma plays very well.... For a guy who should have been on the disc to begin with.

Venom is the best of the bunch. Worth a download and is awesome for air juggles.

Black Panther is decent at least. Reminds me of Wolverine with quick attacks and takedowns.

Sucky Barnes is trash.

Scarlet Johcantact isn't worth a download. Fucking terrible and garbage all round.

Mehster Hunter should have been on the disc, but didn't grab my attention for long.

Random, I'm sorry your birthday was a big downer. I've had my share of Crappy Birthdays myself. If you ever come to Harlem, I can try to make it a little bit more fun.

I'm glad you remained honest and impartial to MVCI's good and bad aspects. People like Maximillian Dood, and Angry Joe are nothing more than cherry-pickers with nothing productive to do. Trust me, I also want to Rider Kick those Weeaboos constantly kissing DBFZ's boots. I also noticed that the Marvel heroes pretty much benched team Capcom. At least Mega Man X delivered the killing blow to Ultron-Sigma.

I have my issues with this game, but Capcom did program a competent fighter than functions well. So I have no beef with that aspect. However, the writing, lack of characters and overall presentation leave a lot to be desired.

I will not bash a game to be in "The Cool Crowd."

Considering that crowd consists of Jim Sterling, Yahtzee, Angry Joe and the Game Grumps. I'm glad to be excluded from that treehouse!

Wonder who's idea it was to drop the fight money idea from SFV as well as the cross play idea?

Probably the same people who thought Resident Evil 6 was "a good idea."

Probably so, considering these are the same people who expect this game to sell 2 million copies.
