Description
Did you know that chickens have a fairly advanced range of vocalizations? They use different calls to indicate specified types of predators (land v. air v. snake), as well as different types and favorabilities of foods. In fact, despite the common misconception that they are "dumb," chickens are actually quite intelligent, proving thier cognitive strengths time and time again in the laboratory setting. Heck, someone in England even taught a chicken to peck out "twinke twinke little star" on a xylophone.I always find it odd when people are surprised to learn that chickens have advanced "linguistic" abilities, or that they score quite high on the cognitive scale; no one questions the intelligence of most other birds, after all. I guess it is just easier to justify eating something if you think it is stupid, emotionless, and inferior.
Anyways, this is Alejandro again (do I love this bird too much, or what?). Since I raised her indoors, and humans talk a whole lot, she seems to have absorbed some of our chattyness; she is much more vocal than any chicken I've met. While Carla expresses her distaste for being chased around with a camera by running away, Alejandro struts right up to the lens and loudly voices her concerns with some classical chicken "anger" calls.
