Description
Meet Lt. Dan, one of my newer rescues! He was languishing in our local Petco for over a month struggling with swim bladder disease - poor little bugger was bobbing on his side all day all stressed out and unhappy. He was getting mighty skinny, and then got a horrible bacterial infection that ate off his entire tail and anal fins, and did some damage to the dorsal and ventrals to boot! So instead of treating or euthanizing him, the store shoved him off in a corner by the sink with the cup lid off to die. Boy was I pissed when I found that! Needless to say, I told them to get a lid because I intended on taking him, which yielded a "... but he's dying." I replied that this surely meant he should be free of charge or VERY discounted. We settled on a dollar for his price, which I used a coupon on and thus still got him for free.
The real funny thing is, the swim bladder disease must have been bacterial just like the fin rot, because a few days of treatment had him swimming underwater where he belongs. He now is slowly getting some regrowth, but the name Lt. Dan - named after the half-man in Forest Gump since he was a half-fish when I got him - is going to stay even when he has long, beautiful finnage, just to reflect his hard start.
