That's the first time I've ever seen how to do a cast shadow in a chart like that XD; In fact, your tutorial has taught me more about shading than most books I've read yet (granted, the few I've read with shading info are hot to draw manga books, or have a very "everything opposite your light source has a shadow"

now...I love manga! I really do!(btw if you're not reading Bakuman you should be!!!!) But in my opinion all the "how to draw manga books" are complete and utter crap...stop reading them!!!

Fist I gotta find that manga, and if it falls in my price range, I'll have to check it out XDD
I get a few pointers out of them I don't find elsewhere (like the shading example) but I rarely recommend them, since you really have to search or have a much higher knowledge of art to understand what they're talking about. I like to pick up more the traditional art drawing books at my library, but then, they rely to much on the "see and draw" method to really explain light. I have terrible depth percetion, due to bad eyesight, and though it helps with color picking most of the time, it rarely helps with shadows and shapes. I actually have to construct almos every little feature to get things to ook halfway right.
I usually just browse dA for tutorials, as they seem to fill in the gaps of my manga books. I usually just buy them for referencing now, as I've learned all I can from them about drawing (and am looking in other places while practicing anatomy) I've picked up three costume references recently that have helped me design things by giving me ideas of how they look, and have a couple that give historical notes on clothing worn way back when. for oddities like that, I do still hang on to some books. XD alot of them though, I haven't looked at in years XD

from what I've seen from those books, they give no real explanation about the things they teach...what they do is say "we do this thing this way!" and that's all...technique without understanding-that is not proper teaching in my book
(my book is a coloring book with a picture of a rubber ducky holding a machete...but still...you get my point

Thanks, even though I know the basics of shadows this managed to simplify it a bit more. The 3d way you did the two different objects with one having it's shadow on the other was very helpful, I wouldn't have thought to do it that way before.
