Description A small windmill I found near the coast a few miles south of the northern tip of Denmark.

I used a sepiatoning set at 50% transperancy, a monochromo channelmixer set at 25% transperancy and finally some burn/dodge work.

I hope you'll like it.
[EDIT] I've been getting some comments about the photo looking too fake. Well, with the technique I described I used, I WANTED it to look unnatural

You really did alot to create this image which moves in a otherworldly "magical" realm. The play of light/highlights on the fields not only gives it an etheral look but gives it a feel of movement - as the light plays upon the field so to are our eyes fooled into a illusion that they are moving and swaying in the wind. And with the thoughts of wind, the windmill also becomes an object of enchanment and storybook adventures; for this is the imaginary land where Don Quixote rides.

Heh... sorry about leaving two comments...

I LOVE that some people say "this looks to fake... blah blah blah... I'm an idiot... your picture doesn't look real enough"... even though it was basically manipulated on a relatively minor way (all the main elements of the final picture were already there in the initial picture... all that was changed were basic settings).

Anyone that doesn't like this because it doesn't look "real" enough, are either so ignorant as to allow the complete dismissal of their opinion, or are so stupid as to allow the mocking of them at all points.

hahahahahahahahahaahahahaahh

Anyway... once again... nice job.

Very impressive. Was convinced the whole picture was computer generated until I checked out the actual unmanipulated picture.

It looks strangely apocalyptic and surreal...if that is what you wanted to achieve, well then you definitely succeeded. I also love the colours of the unmanipulated picture...beautiful, but more like your ordinary windmill...and certainly less controversial than this.

the original photo is great, but i also loved what you've done with this manipulation. i think the reason why it looks "fake" is because the lighting in this version is odd and the shadows, although correct, look unlike anything in real life. great shot though.

Very surreal, very nice. The burn looks very nice, and brings eveything together like madness. The oats look like sea oats, and remind me of lighthouses on the beach.

Wow this is really nice! I love how you redid the tones~ It has a very nice dark feel to it. It does look a bit unrealistic, but that adds to the picture I think. The highlights on the grass stand out nicely, and the change in tone made the sky very pretty. Awesome! *+fav* !

I read lots of your comments, and know why it looks fake, but as an unforgiving audience I would say it just looks fake. If you put more vegetation around the base, it wouldn't have that floating look.

Alright, that one is better. The windmill is very clean and "new" looking, and when you applied the effects to the image it made everything besides the windmill appear old and "dirty". You also faded out a lot of the plants around the base of the windmill, which makes it seem like you pasted in the windmill. What also made me think it was fake is that the base of the windmill has no growth. It wasn't until I saw the unedited version that I realized it was on a slab of concrete. I appologize for previous comments, I just really hate when someone posts a crappy Bryce 3D image as photography and makes up a story about being in this magical place in some foreign country.

mishmash [2003-03-27 16:27:09 +0000 UTC]

Amazing job, man. The windmill kind of looks rendered, but as you say its a matter of taste and I like it.
The surreal look works really well with the strange subject and isolated area. I think it fits perfectly.
As far as the dodging goes, I think the way you used it looks fine. It really makes the picture. The one thing I would suggest is maybe dodging the near side of the windmill at a low opacity. I think it might just make the highlights look more like extraordinary lighting conditions then. At the moment the grass looks a bit disjointed from the rest of the image. Kind of like there are 2 different lighting conditions. To me that's where the fake look comes from.
Great shot, anyway, man. Very well done.

gavinnosler [2003-03-27 15:05:08 +0000 UTC]

Look, man. If you wouldn't have lied I wouldn't mind this post. This is obviously a fake scene. The windmill was most likely modeled in some 3d program, and for some *strange* reason the plants to seem to fade out at the base of the windmill. Maybe you had your workstation set up "near the coast a few miles south of the northern tip of Denmark", but I really doubt that. You could have at least tried to match the JPEG compression on the windmill, plants, and sky before you put them all together.
