Description
Update on Sept 1st 2013: I remade the tutorial almost completely because the old one kinda sucked. If anyone is interested about the old version it's here: i.imgur.com/VrFRPVE.jpgSince I get asked about which tool I used a lot, this improved version is done with the basic brush tool.
Whew
Anyway, when ~Rustic-Moonlit-Rose commented that the fire in raycrystal.deviantart.com/art/โฆ looks amazing I said that tutorials could help her but she said that there aren't any for Sai really and I noticed that too so I thought I could make one since I like drawing fire
So yeah... I hope it's good
By the way, I used the watercolor tool (like I always do).
Since people are asking about it, the settings I use are 0 for blending, 50 for dilution, 80 for persistence.
EDIT: Holy f--- O_O I wake up in the morning and what do I find...? 2000 faves!!! +40 watchers more
EDIT2: ...omg. A DD? I can't believe it, oh my god thank you so much!!!! O_O *does not know what to say*

Oh thank you.
I got lazy and didn't actually redraw any part of the frames. I just recopied the layers and scaled them down slightly.

eh it's an okay tutorial... I found a cartoon explosions tutorial that says relatively the same thing. Not what I expected, so it kind of disappointed me...
I usually try to give positive comments, but I really can't here. As I said, It's okay, but it could be more detailed. This fire isn't really realistic... I would be okay for manga/anime/cartoons, but that's about it. You should have explained that it was a cartoon fire tutorial... I was looking for realistic.
Sorry to post a bad comment.

Yeah, it just happens to be my style, sorry to disappoint you if you wanted something more realistic but my style just isn't fully realistic, so I can't really offer a tutorial to make fire like that. A person just asked me to make a tutorial about how I draw fire, not based on any special style. I hope you can find something suitable to your likings and thanks for your opinion anyway.

Then why not search for a realistic fire tutorial instead of this one which obviously isn't that? :L

Fantastic tutorial, and the only one of it's kind! Many MANY thanks
Could you perhaps elaborate on the colour adjustments and refining step though? Mine keeps coming out much more flat and pastelly than yours and although I can see the differences (more vibrant colours and defined flames) I can't see HOW you've done it?

RayCrystal In reply to soline [2011-08-14 17:31:23 +0000 UTC]
Thank you very much, glad you like it
It could maybe be easier to explain if I saw your version of the fire, but if it's "flat" it's good to add contrast more and some depth/perspective with "smoke" on the background, that's what I do and by the refining I generally just smudge the bad/not fire-looking spots (which you can do with the watercolor by pressing it only gently or not at all, obviously works only if you have a tablet. Generally this tutorial is better if you do) and add a bit of detail if it loses it's shape. Also what makes everything look flat is if you do everything in the same direction.
I hope it was any help, if not you can show me what your work looked like so I can maybe help better
