Description [09/05/11] This is my first tutorial...coloring lineart. Definitely not the only way to color lineart and probably not even the best way. I would also like to point out that this is a rather "quick and dirty" way of shading, one that I do not use anymore. That said, I hope this is helpful in some way to someone. Also...I apologize for the horrible anatomy. I was still learning!

[EDIT 4.0] It was pointed out to me by ~weaver1217 that I completely skipped right over Step 4. Do not be alarmed. There is no Step 4. Step 4 is just a myth. Proceed directly from Step 3 to Step 5, no not pass Go, do not collect $200. I'm glad you guys like this one so much. One day I'll make a tutorial for the way I paint now. FAQs are now included Added a disclaimer. [/EDIT]

READ THIS! Seriously. For the love of all that is holy, READ THIS! This is a VERY old tutorial and it is no longer the way that I paint. If, for whatever reason, you still insist on following it, disregard steps 2 and 3/4 and READ THIS.
The easiest way to make the white areas transparent for your lineart is to put the lines on their own layer and change the Layer Mode to Multiply. Color underneath this layer.
This will save you (and me) lots of headache.

I can't find the Channels. Help?
The easiest way to make the white areas transparent for your lineart is to put the lines on their own layer and change the Layer Mode to Multiply. Color underneath this layer.
How do I do this in the GIMP? Sorry, but I do not know. Search for GIMP tutorials on DA and they will explain it far better than I ever could.

So glad it all worked out! My original version of Photoshop is so old that it doesn't support making custom brushes over a certain pixel limit. So this is the way I have to separate my lines, or else do it in PS Elements then switch programs to color, lol.

Good luck! It's certainly a challenge. I started teaching myself to use it a little less that a year ago and I'm still learning new things each time I use it. XD

Are you familiar with SUMO Paint? It's a program online that looks a lot like what you show here... but I'm struggling to use it.

I wish I had Photoshop... >_<

Nope, never heard of it. I've only ever worked in and old version of Macromedia Fireworks, an old version of PS, and PS Elements. And I used to use some free program that had "Photo" somewhere in the name. It was primarily for actual photo editing, but it had a smudge tool, so I used it in conjunction with Fireworks - which didn't have one.

You can always download a demo from Adobe. I dunno what all the demo has, or how long it lasts, but it might be fun.

[link] This is the program I was talking about, don't ask me why I didn't link it in my last message.

I've got a friend who said that they'll help me learn how to use PSP, but I am so new at even wanting to try digital art that I don't even know where to begin!

That...is amazing. It's practically a free, online version of Photoshop. That just blows me away.

Just from playing with it for a few minutes, it looks like you should be able to do anything in it that you can do in Photoshop. Probably not import the PS brushes you can find on DA, but that's sort of a minor thing. I would say start by coloring lineart. It helps you get a feel for the brushes and other tools without having to worry about drawing something too. I think I'm about to color a lineart with the program just to see what it can do. :3

I was terrified of PS when I first got it (for a long time it just sat on my comp, lol)...I eventually just opened a blank canvas and started playing - trying all of the features and just sort of scribbling blobs so I could figure out what tool did what. Not the best way, but it got me over my fear of PS. XD

If you play with it to color it... would it be too much to ask for a tutorial??? Pretty please? I'll even do a custom My Little Pony for you!!!

Oh goodness...I dunno if you'd want to see a tutorial from my first try with a new program, lol! But I'll take screenshots along the way and if it turns out halfway decent, you can count on it.

~_~ Okay, I fail. Lol. I've fought with SUMO for hours and still can't get the lineart to separate cleanly. -sigh- I just don't know what to tell ya.

Learn PSP from your friend? XD Haha, apparently no matter how much SUMO looks like PS, it's still not the same. I might try and paint something original with it, but it will probably be after the holidays when I have more time to fight with it. I will be victorious!

NiteMuse In reply to RebeccaStapp [2008-11-27 05:54:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks anyway! I'd rather someone experienced tell me that the program won't work very well than to find out myself and get totally frustrated and scared away from digital painting.

Oh, I'm sure it works well enough. But between myself and the tech-guru at the college computer lab, we both had serious trouble trying to figure out how to do the simplest things. XD

But don't give up! If you're looking for a free program, there's always the GIMP. I've never worked in it, but a lot of my friends do and they produce some amazing stuff with it. Check out *Pliochippus and *Linuska ...I believe they both work primarily in GIMP and they're truly awesome.

Okay... new question! On a very, very old conversation... (this is on your Lineart Tutorial, btw! )

Are you familiar with Photoshop Elements, and could you give me any pointers?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RebeccaStapp In reply to NiteMuse [2009-09-08 00:38:35 +0000 UTC]

(Sorry for the late response!)

I've worked in PS Elements a little bit...to my knowledge, it works pretty much just like Photoshop. It's all a matter of playing around until you get something that looks good.

Gosh you are soo good at making these tutorials.
The only problem I have is the shading. Like where to chade, and what color I should make that. But now, I think I have it. xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RebeccaStapp In reply to maerocks [2008-06-18 17:17:42 +0000 UTC]

Aww, thank you so much! I'm glad you could get something out of it!
And yeah, shading is always the hardest part for me too. Looking at photos or work by artists you admire helps bunches with shadow/highlight placement. And the "homg what color do I shade this with?" panic spell is why I started using the dodge/burn tools in the first place, lol. It really helps alot.

RebeccaStapp In reply to lebrnjmes23 [2008-05-26 03:10:47 +0000 UTC]

Yep, I hear that from a lot of people. Easiest way to keep from having a blank background is to just slap some splattery smudgey brushes on and blur it a lil. It's quick and lazy, but it works, lol.

lebrnjmes23 In reply to RebeccaStapp [2008-05-26 15:40:49 +0000 UTC]

Another way of making the lineart into its own layer is to make it into a brush and then using the brush on a new layer

Nice tutorial! You use the burn and dodge tool better than I usually do XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RebeccaStapp In reply to Delumier [2008-04-03 18:57:10 +0000 UTC]

Yep, I had heard of doing that. But with the version of Photoshop I use, it will only let me make brushes up to a certain size (somewhere in the 1500 pixel range). So if I have a really big picture, I can't do that method, so I just stick with this one for now until I find something that works better. It's not that much harder than making a lineart brush anyways; just a few more steps.

And thank you! Yush, I love my dodge and burn tools! I know it's lazy and yadda yadda. Whatever.

Bleh. Sometimes more challenge brings out worse art :/ OF COURSE I'M NOT SAYING YOUR ART SUCKS OR ANYTHING. GOD FORBID. But sometimes it's so hard I'm just like "FUCK IT. I give up ;-;"
