Description
[09/05/11] This is my first tutorial...coloring lineart. Definitely not the only way to color lineart and probably not even the best way. I would also like to point out that this is a rather "quick and dirty" way of shading, one that I do not use anymore. That said, I hope this is helpful in some way to someone. Also...I apologize for the horrible anatomy. I was still learning![EDIT 4.0] It was pointed out to me by ~weaver1217 that I completely skipped right over Step 4. Do not be alarmed. There is no Step 4. Step 4 is just a myth. Proceed directly from Step 3 to Step 5, no not pass Go, do not collect $200. I'm glad you guys like this one so much.
The easiest way to make the white areas transparent for your lineart is to put the lines on their own layer and change the Layer Mode to Multiply. Color underneath this layer.
This will save you (and me) lots of headache.

I can't find the Channels. Help? The easiest way to make the white areas transparent for your lineart is to put the lines on their own layer and change the Layer Mode to Multiply. Color underneath this layer.
How do I do this in the GIMP? Sorry, but I do not know. Search for GIMP tutorials on DA and they will explain it far better than I ever could.

Thank you! Oh no! Well, I think it will work in open canvas too. You may just have to find a new way to separate the lineart from the background.
But the other tools should work about the same.
You might try talking to *silverglass19 ...I think she uses OpenCanvas. ...I think. And if she does, I'm sure she can help you.

Nah, that's what I thought too when I first started trying to use it.
But I still have most of my brain intact still.

Different way to make the lineart ''separated'' than what I'm used to I'll try it some time. (Normally I use ''multiply'' on layer mode or if I want to colour the line art itself I use a mask..more complicated tho.)
Dodge and burn are excellent for shading Personally I prefer to use different colours for shading and only use dodge or burn to give a little extra depth tho, but whatever works for you. ^^
Nice tutorial and good looking mare Thanks for sharing.

Yep, masks make my head hurt. If I'm coloring the lines themselves, I'll use the same separating procedure, just multiple times in different colors then go back and erase what I don't need from each color. A little bit time-consuming, but it works.
And yeah, I used to shade with different colors (and I probably should be doing that now as well, I intend to start doing that again) but this was meant to be just a quick and rough shading guide so people don't end up with flat-looking colored lineart.
Thanks for your comments!

And I ended up getting an awesome new character out of the deal too.
Glad you like her. I'll do a better piece with her in it soon.

Ah...yup, I hated not having Photoshop. And then when I did finally get it, I was too afraid to use it!
This should work with other programs though...pretty much any one with layers it should work with.

GIMP is kind of like Photoshop, but I personally think it is better. If you search in google/yahoo wherever for 'GIMP download' it should come up, it's pretty easy to use.
Oh, and the tutorial really helped, thanks!

Yep. I need to get a newer version (at least 7 or something, since it has soooo many more features than 6) but I'm always wary when I DL something.
I got my copy of Photoshop from a friend, so I was lucky there, but I don't want to press my luck with DLing too much.
