Well from what Jim Hansen said and my speculation, The movie is basically about children wanting to be gown ups, to do grown up things. (Sara yells at her step mother saying she treats her like a child, yet the step mother mentions that Sara see's her as the fabled wicked step mother from Cinderella, a fantasy story)So Sara fantasizes that a grown man falls in love with her to take her away to his magical kingdom. Where as Toby (the baby) represents her responsibilities to the real world, responsibilities of becoming an adult. (she wants Jareth to take him away, her fantasy man to take away her responsibilities and connections to the real world) Through her perils she realizes that she can not live in a fantasy world to become a gown up. That she can not be dreamy with dolls and dresses. That fantasy does not control her, she is an independent woman growing up. ("you have no power over me") It's actually kind of sad to us fantasy lovers. In the end she realizes that she has to live in the real world but will always need her imagination, that she will need the fantasy characters as she grows up. In a way the movie implicates that it is all in Sara's head. If you look in her room in the beginning when she puts on the crown and lip stick as her father and step mother leave for dinner you'll see every scene in the room. All of the main characters are either dolls or stuffed animals. There is a porcelain Jareth on a stand on her dresser. and the music box plays the son "as the world falls down" with a doll of her in the dress from that scene. To me that implicates that the whole movie takes place in her head. If you look on the mirror stand there is a photograph of a woman who looks like Sara gown up. (her mother) and a man much like Jareth. (actually it is David Bowie) You never see her mother so it is implied that she is separated from her father or dead. At first I thought her mother had dies but realized it was a divorce. The photo says that her mother had an affair with this man or at least to Sara that is the way it looked (from the way they are holding each other It is sexual in a caring way). They both look like actors in costumes. So that says Sara grew up with an actress mother who often worked with fanciful men. Sara when little must have seen the chemistry or seen him as something great like a king. Her mother must have often left so she as a young child would see her mother having fanciful adventures with this man who whisked her away. So for Sara's own fantasy of course she would use the image of this mysteriously hansom man who her mother knew. So that brings us back to the fact that Sara wants to be a grown up and the role model she looked to was her mother. The lipstick she puts on was her mothers (the pack rat scene) and it seems so were many of the toys. Her mothers leaving brought her to look to fantasy and to make it familiar she used faces she knew for comfort. She also begins with acting in the very, very first scene with a book that was probably also her mothers. It may even be the play her mother was in with that man. on IMDB it here's what it said in her profile. (Sarah Williams is a strong willed teenager still discovering what the important things in life are about. Her mother, Linda, is an actress who had an affair with a co-star, Jeremy, and her parents separated. Her father found a new love and soon after their marriage, Sarah's step-brother Toby was born-something she highly resented.) She seems to have read it many times. You can figure most of this out from that fist scene. Anyway with all that back story it leads to the fact that Sara creates this world to escape to, for comfort, and to be a grown up like her mother, whom she idolizes. The final lesson of the Labyrinth, is that we all are consumed by fantasy and imagination as children but to become adults we must realize where our responsibilities lye and that there is a time and a place, to be children when we are children and adults when we are adults. At the same time it says not to loose your imagination and to keep the inner child (Hoggle: Yes, should you need us, for any reason at all...
Sarah: I need you, Hoggle.
Hoggle: You do?
Sarah: [nods] I don't know why, but every now and again in my life - for no reason at all - I need you. All of you.)
It is about that journey in realization in between childhood and adulthood that every teenager goes through. I think that is why so many teenagers like it, so many girls in particular. They can relate, I believe each and every one of us at one point wanted a beautiful king to take us away. Although some girls never realize that it is not going to happen (thank you movies...) so they continue to have relationship issues because no man can be the perfect prince. In a way Labyrinth shows that there has to be balance. But really Sara is working through dealing with her parents divorce. She idolizes her mother and by the end realizes she can not live in a fantasy world, needing to be her own person. (she realized that although she needed to grow up, being mature about things doesn't mean you have to let go of your dreams)
So he's not a pedophile, nor does the movie try to paint him as one. That's my analytical view of the Labyrinth.
Sorry about writing you an essay. I just have thought about it for a long time but never really written it down.

Just watching the movie. I look really closely at movies and I'm really good at symbolism and the psychology of it all. That and I have the DVD, there is an interview where Jim Henson mentions some of it.
Does that answer your question?

I would think online. But the best are hand made. I have a friend who makes all her costumes, to the best of quality.

Wow you have amazing talent! I love the way you draw Sarah & Jareth... but especially Jareth.
I love the ballroom scene as well, it sucks that its not longer, so I just rewind and watch it over n' over. Why didn't Sarah stay at the end?! *sigh* I'll never understand.

Yeah! I rewind it too! Best part ever, and yeah I would love to see it longer. I never understand why she leaves either, I always finish the right line for her and yell at the tv. "WHY, OH COME ON! Yes, I'll STAY!" lol I think it's beacuse it's suposed to be a kinds movie but I say *pah!* It's David Bowie!
Thanks for the comment, loved the feed back.
