Description
After long last and many requests, I finally made a corset making tutorial. Keep in mind that there are LOTS of different styles of corsets. For the corset in this tutorial, I used a altered version of this pattern: [link] and got my boning/grommeting supplies from here: [link]You can use a lot of different kinds of boning for corsets, I just happen to prefer very severe steel hoop boning. You can also order boning pre-cut and tipped, though I often find that in the end, I don't have quite the right sizes, so I prefer to do it myself. Many of the plastic bonings can be sewn straight to the cloth, but that's not as cool (or authentic) as making channels.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me! You can see the finished corset here: [link]

I think I only use about 18 here, and that's really heavily boned for a Victorian corset, but yes, Elizabethan corsets do take a lot more boning because they're boned ALL the way across the front.

For boning, 1/2" wide. That's the only size you can get hoop boning in. Though, most patterns are designed for 1/4" boning, so be sure to double check that.

yeah. the site doesnt say which kind of boning to use.
my royalbustyness needs 1/2 tho. so im using that no matter what.
and an update.
I fixed the last bodice. had to shorten it and take in the sides a couple of inches. Its so hard to do that with the boning still in . GAH. im glad i didnt butcher the poor thing. lol. =3

Yeah, it is hard to take something in while it's boned (I usually have to take the boning out). >.<

I actually managed to do it though. could have been taken in a little more but I was like. UGH> not going through that again.
and now Im actually thinking about taking in my sisters, hers might be easier cause it only needs to go in a little and theres only one steel in each side. mine had 3.

really helpful, I'll try soon and let you know about the result. damn but how many bones did you used?? I often insert 12-14 bones in each corset.....I guess you used at least 24 here...

Hm... I think I used 18 pieces of boning in this, but I'd have to count to make sure. Everyone's always amazed at how much boning I use in one corset, but hey, it gives more structure XD

well, I have to admit that I don't use 20 or more bones because here in italy they're very hard to find and very expensive, they cost 1.50 € each one if you're lucky, maybe more....so if I have to sell a corset with 20 bones it will be so much more expensive than one with 12 or so....and nobody will buy it Y.Y

Ah, yeah, that's perfectly understandable. Here, I just order an 18 yard roll of hoop boning and cut/tip every piece myself. It's a lot cheaper than ordering the pre-cut kind.
