Description
ALMOST TOO LATEAlmost too late I come to realize
As ego ceases its indignant protests,
Every slap you’ve given me
But punctuated your impassioned plea:
“Awake, my love, awake!”
Shaking now my slumber off
And rubbing clear my eyes of sleepy fantasy
I see, grasp, kiss the hand
Whose sweet impressions linger
On my stinging cheek.
No one but my truest friend
Would strive so mightily
To rouse and rally these my soldiers,
Intellect, ambition, discipline,
My own life to save.
Seizing passion’s sword in one hand
As the other to yours clings,
To the fray I hasten joyously,
But not before I pause to kneel in gratitude
And vow to sleep, beloved, nevermore.
