Description
...or ladybug to those over the pond.So I had another play with the acrylic paint today.
I had tonnes of fun and only stopped because people were moaning about not being fed, I hadn't eaten, so why the heck would they need to?
So this is not really finished....but I couldn't be bothered to do it as a WIP so I'll just edit this lot when I've finished it... I need to do bits of tweaking on the antenna and I want to make the wood texture better .
Got the photo from the amazing stock gallery of aka ME! [link]
I'm pretty damned chuffed with it though...I think I might do more paintings.
It's had about 5 hours work up to now.
Acrylic on canvas 12" x16" (30cm x 40cm)
EDIT: I've played around with the wooden background and although it's not really as I would like I'm worried that I may overwork it so I'm leaving it at that for now. So I think I must have spent about 6 or 7 hours on it altogether.

I'm really enjoying your color pieces! Great job! I love the red color on it's back, and how you've managed to really bring out the roundness of it. Very nice Ruth.

Cute little ladybug...
Seeing the thumbnail, i thought it's a photo, then i thought it's a digital painting, but hey, it's traditional. Amazing.

nicely done! - I used to like ladybugs until we were infested with the very similar looking Japaneese Beatles which like to pester and bite for no reason - now I cant tell them apart so they usually all meet there demise if they are near me ..*

thanks! - well this is a cute friendly garden variety that gets rid of aphids and doesn't party with 10,000 friends, so no squishing allowed.

Who would ever imagine that a beetle could look this good in paint? You gave it full dimension and color, shading and reflections spot on...great job on an otherwise unexpected subject.
Really exciting to see you painting with these captivating results!

oh and I updated the pic with a better background. I'm much happier with it now, but still got a lot of learning to do about textures with paint.

Thanks Denis, it really pleases me to think that you like it. hmm yes, not my usual subject, but the local RSPB nature reserve are hosting an art exhibition based on the reserve and as everyone else will be painting bitterns, barn owls and poppies, I thought I'd go with a bug.
But it IS a lady in shiny black and red.

I see the difference in the new background. It ties in more with the Ladybug now and has more depth and texture, good contrast with the dramatic shadow. Nice painting indeed!

Thanks David. why what's wrong with my photo? hehehe! oh I've updated it now by the way after working a bit more on the background.
Yeah I think I could get into this painting mallarky.

Well Ruth, where do I begin?
Seriously? I'd be careful about doing too much to that pic. My first impression was that the log needed more detail, but I changed my mind. If you look at that pic, purely as an abstract pic, it works. It's got a really nice balance to it, and the colours work well. It may still work with more detail. It is a risk. Maybe you could mess around on PS with it.
Bloody house stinks of burnt chicken atm. I boiled up a carcass and the stock is now a thick crispy layer of charcoal. Bloody comps, I got sidetracked.

yes the perspective is wrong and it's a bit distracting I think, so I'll work on improving that today.
