Probably. It'll take quite a few coats though.

Thanks for this tutorial!
But, um, is it normal for a lot of the ink to come out while you rinse it?

SailorAnime In reply to AnastasiaA [2010-10-03 01:05:26 +0000 UTC]

That does happen occasionally; but if a lot of ink is coming out, it may be because the ink didn't fully dry yet.

Ah, okay, well I made sure to leave it for over 8 hours, haha.
But it turned out well, the colour shows nicely despite all that came out. c:

It's weird that it would take so long to dry though, my usually take 2-3 hours at the most. It might be the conditions (climate, temperature, whatnot) or the amount of dye sprayed on it. Either way, I'm glad it turned out! ^^

sorry for asking so many quetions, I am major noob, but
If you can't but the fw ink. (I did re-search)
and don't have a Dick Blick's in your state, then what else would you suggest using?

SailorAnime In reply to adoreelricxox [2010-08-14 15:21:27 +0000 UTC]

Some people crack open sharpies and use the ink from them, but that's a somewhat different method. That said, *FireLilyCosplay has a really nice Sharpie Dye tutorial, iirc.

SailorAnime In reply to adoreelricxox [2010-08-14 06:41:08 +0000 UTC]

FW Ink is an artist ink. It's usually available at fine arts stores like Dick Blick's.

what color wig do you think is easiest to dye?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SailorAnime In reply to adoreelricxox [2010-06-13 15:40:11 +0000 UTC]

White is really easy to dye, but the best thing you can do is get as close to the color you want as possible (Slightly on the lighter side if possible) and dye it from there to perfect the color.

by using this method, will the hair become stiff due to the ink?

SailorAnime In reply to AkaiRizumu [2010-04-14 17:28:00 +0000 UTC]

No, once you rinse the wig, it softens up again.

if you rinse it, does it loose it's shape?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SailorAnime In reply to adoreelricxox [2010-08-14 06:41:38 +0000 UTC]

A little bit, yes. So you should style it once it's fully dry.

adoreelricxox In reply to SailorAnime [2010-08-14 07:33:55 +0000 UTC]

all right, and will the color wash out?
It shouldn't if washed cold...
I also heard on cosplay.com that Sometimes the color sometimes ends up blotchy, that a few coats will need to be applied.
Here's were I read it: [link]

If it's dry when you rinse it, only the excess dye will wash out. Also, they are right. It may end up a bit blotchy, but going over it again (and possibly again) should help that.

Cool tutorial!
Trying to find a how-to on dyeing is hella frustrating for one's first dye job.

If I'm not being too brash might I suggest that you specify to use 70% alcohol for the dye mix.
It would also prolly be helpful to note that 90% alcohol will remove the dye if one makes a mistake.
(Or at least this holds true for the Sharpie Dye Method, so I's presume it applies to the FW too?)
Gotta love tutorials <3

Though it should be noted that this makes the wig crunchy if not rinsed after wards.

SailorAnime In reply to srsRazzmatazz [2009-10-12 15:49:31 +0000 UTC]

Ah, you're right. I should have specified. I'll fix that. Thanks! ^^
