Description
2010Updated with a cleaner look and with my current style of cell-shading (which although it's a longer tutorial, it's actually easier IMO). I'll start trying to answer questions now that I'm frequenting DevART more often, so feel free to ask away!
For those of you who may prefer the older version (which I understand if you do) I've uploaded it to my photobucket for your pleasure.
2006
Aha! Finally I have gotten off my lazy, procrastinating butt and made a Cell-shading tutorial! Fear my cell-shading!
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!!
Anyway.... this is a tutorial that was kinda requested by Calypso, since she so wants to learn how to cell shade. So I searched for cell-shading tutorials, and found very few (AKA NONE) that went into detail on how they cell-shade. So I made this. I don't know if it's any better, but I hope it helps all the GIMP-users out there!

Thank you very much for this, I understand how to duplicate the background layer but how do you change the duplicate to a transparent layer?

This basically helped me learn how to color. Thank you for this.
But I do have one problem, the actual Cell shading.
Once I've lassoed the area I want to shade nothing happens.
How exactly do we go about changing the color value?

I've gotten all of it except one part. The part I don't get is where it states, "After you are finished with the mask, select the color underneath it, and now you can shade with little fear of going out side the lines" What do you mean select the color underneath it??

Thank you so much for this tutorial! Even though I use diffrent language GIMP, it's way more helpful in getting around cell shading that all those Photoshop tutorials...
I hope I'll do good with masks and all this stuff next time I'll color. It sounds like it makes things a lot easier.
Keep the good work up!

very helpful. used to use paths for everything on one layer lol. i was wondering, instead of the free form select tool, couldnt you use the path and select from it? im on a laptop and my hands arent exactly steady XD

Lol yeah, its good! But instead of going up 10 in saturation, and down 20 in value for the shading, you could just open the layers box [ctrl+L] make a transparent layer, and turn the opacity down to around 25. what do you think?

Ok, so I have the layer, and the mask ontop of it. I coloured it all in with a nice light blue and am now shading it. But I can't make it any darker since I made it come through the mask with black, and nothing is darker than black. Help?

Problem solved, I was trying to change the mask, not the layer itself.

Excellent!!That really makes it clear. The easier the tool is to use the less work it is to create.Working in side the computer is REALLY NEW for me,I started with airbrush in 1961,and tattooing in1972.Creating with a PC is quite a change for me!! And,sure isn't boring!!(and,I DON'T have to clean up the brushes,or the studio when I'm finished!!)

Wish I'd known about this days ago, woulda shaved hours of labour off the picture I'm working on.
D'you think adding a gaussian blur of about 7-9 pixels to highlights and shadow would give it a soft-cell-ish look?

Oh, I understand. I can be confusing sometimes. Anyway, you basically want to use a color that is darker than your base color, and color where you want it to be darker. I use the free-hand select tool to get precise lines. Using the free-hand select, you outline the area you want to darken and then color it in. For highlights you do pretty much the same - get a lighter color, outline the area you want to highlight with the free-hand select, and color it in.
Does that help?
