Description
This tutorial is new. It includes additional notes and will replace the preview version, as it includes one through three point perspective and other things....Murr... I haven't signed on in months, but I thought I might upload a little somethin' somethin' for you before I lose my internet. So yeah, I won't be replying to notes, comments et cetera, but I hope you will enjoy this tutorial.
Heh, lots of typos I'm sure. u__u Careful before you download; the image is around 15 thousand pixels high.
D.A. LUV,
Sasha Lynn Stowers
UPDATE: Thanks very much for support via faves and comments. I'm also really happy to get a DD for a tutorial (my favorite devs.)
For those of you using this for classes or as a teaching aid: I'm happy you find this so useful. I don't mind if you use this as an outline for your work. But if you could credit me with the text, point your students to my website or DA page that'd be awetastic. Also, if you could provide me some info where you are teaching it (name of school, location, etc.) or pictures of your students using my text that be great : ) I'd like to combine these and other tutorials into a mega thick book, and I think it would helpful when I create a book proposal.
Thanks very much,
Sasha Lynn Stowers
I make my tutorials for free, but if you enjoy my tutorials and want to donate some funds for gas, art books, and such, I would appreciate it. [link]

- i think this tutorial is going to make my life so much easier. ; w; ~~ i can never get perspective right unless it's by bizarre chance.
thanks lots for this tutorial!

This tutorial is amazing! I am just a beginner as an artist and it's so hard to find things dumbed-down enough for me
On another note, if you are interested in the history of art, the Renaissance artists did not pioneer perspective; the Romans used it too. Check out some second style wall paintings if you're interested: [link]

Thanks for the link. I didn't know wikipedia had an entry on it. : ) Although Romans did a lot when it comes to perspective, I'm not sure if you can really call it linear so didn't include it in this, but I'll probably mention the Romans if I do another perspective tutorial to complement this one with trompe_l'oeil.
Thanks again and I'm happy you enjoyed the tutorial.

Just the fact that you spent so much time to write this is amazing, but what's more, it's very appreciated. I find perspectives (as well as foreshortening) to be one of the harder aspects to grasp in art, so I'm always happy when I find a very descriptive tutorial. I'm sure this will help me a ton. Thank you so much!

Very good tutorial and I found it very useful. But what if there are many things in same picture with different angles, do they all have their own vanishing points?

sashas In reply to lukas-art [2009-02-01 20:17:29 +0000 UTC]
If your object is not tilted toward or away from the picture plane, but from left to right, it will probably still work with the vanishing points you have.
Linear perspective is rather limiting in that you can only work with a parallel grid ( [link] ). If your object is at some funny angle, which does not fit in with the grid, it has to have it's own vanishing points. Usually when I have to do this, I just draw a grid for one set of points, and try to draw the other object in a position that 'feels right,' instead of having to deal with more vanishing points.
I hope that helps some,
Sasha

Thank you for all of your explaining. I guess there is no easy way to deal and with many objects and therefore to explain that. It's probably one of the things that you have to get from practice... What is ' picture plane' ?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
sashas In reply to lukas-art [2009-02-01 21:53:33 +0000 UTC]
The picture plane would be the flat surface of your drawing. It's what is captured in the frame of your drawing. If something goes out of frame of the drawing, it is going out of the picture plane. And if something is tilted toward the viewer, it is tilting toward the picture plane.
I don't know if I explained that well, but I hope that makes it a bit clearer.

oh, I think I get it Picture plane is like a window with frames? And drawing is all the stuff we see through that window?

Wonderful tutorial, but I'm running into some problems:
When I draw my "stopping shape" (A square in this situation), I can't get all of the corners to touch the respective lines without making it.....well, not a perfect square. Should the "stopping square" be irregular?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
sashas In reply to Muffinofdoom45 [2009-02-01 20:34:23 +0000 UTC]
Er, if you are using one point perspective, the 'stopping shape' should be the a perfect square. My advice would be to draw one of the sides of your 'stopping shape' and make sure that it is parallel to the similar side on you starting shape, then using the edges of this line, draw the rest of your shape from that.

thank you, this was a giant help to a piece I started working on. I was trying to do a perspective from the worm point of view, but I just couldn't seem to get the look I wanted. So I came on here looking for a perspective tutorial and saw this. Turns out the type of perspective I needed was the 3 point, which I haven't even leanred in school yet >.< lol but this tutorial was so easy to understand, maybe I can take a crack at it now! Thanks again!

What a great tutorial! I took a class on the fundamentals of art and design and we learned about perspective, but it didn't make any sense. So I bought a book about it, and it still didn't make sense. But your tutorial helped to clear it up! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. It's much appreciated.

OMG This was so awesome!! I was reading it, and it seemed like it was eternal, but it was so interesting I had to keep on going, and the fact that it is 2:00am made me want to stop and fall asleep right there, but I kept on reading 'till the end It was really interesting and I learned more than I thought I would ^^
You explained everything I didn't understand, wanted to know or needed to work with All I can tell you is that this is the most complete, detailed and best explained tutorial I've seen in DA by far (and believe me, I've seen MANY tutorials)
Sorry about the two paragraphs long comment, but this tutorial was absolutely worth it. I can't believe it took me so long to find it!
Thanx so much!

Wow! Very, very good job.
I've been trying to teach myself perspective for almost a year now. Every time I read a tutorial, I get so confused, But this one is really good. I actually understand what I'm doing now. I like how you put the vocabulary in bold and images were really helpful.
Keep up the good work.
