Artist's Notes: First of all, I would like to apologize for disappearing for MORE THAN HALF A YEAR. I've been very busy for the past few months and have only recently gotten access to a scanner. Now to talk about the actual work itself. One of the things I've been working on over the past few month was brainstroming and sketching for a fantasy series of mine that may or may not ever get made. I posted a sketch a while back of the two main characters of the series and now I've made a character study of one of the creatures. The species of this little guy could be something like Cathartoraptor testaduron, not sure what to name the character itself though, maybe something  like Scraps or Charon, I'm really bad at naming things. The lady in the bottom left corner is the embalmer or plague doctor Anastasia from the original post, the traveling companion of this little dinosaur. I put her here for a size comparison with the average adult female height. I'll probably have a more detailed post on these characters some time in the future, I would have liked put more detail into this one but I just needed to post something. I still need to think of  a way to distinguish this guys from other members of his species. I was thinking of making little bestiary pages for this series with information on how the different creatures of this world live and interact with their environment and nearby human populations, tell me if you guys would be interested in that. Hopefully I will be posting more often for a while, we'll see.

Thanks, I wanted to give it a beak suitable for eating bone, so I turned to the bearded vulture for inspiration.

I'm going to call the woman Anastasia but I'm not sure what to call the little dinosaur. I was thinking something like Charon or Scraps, maybe Styx. What do you think?

if is gonna be creepy symbolic them Charon/Styx. Scraps sounds more for a comic-relief character.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking too. I'll probably go with Styx/Charon or at least something symbolic, like you said.

I have to ask because I have an entire list of custom dinosaurs, what does cathartoraptor mean?

Translated literally it means "purifying thief" or "cleansing thief". I chose this name as a reference to cathartiformes, the order of birds that contains New World vultures, as well as the word catharsis, which means a release of intense emotions usually associated with tragedy. It should become more apparent why I chose this name when I start releasing more details about the story I'm planning to have him in. Still not sure what to name the chararcter himself though.

That makes sense... I guess. But why fuse it with a pachycephalosaurus?

Rule of cool mostly. Other creatures I am planning for this series have a more logical evolutionary history but the idea for this guy was concieved at the very earliest stages of brain storming, when my creatures were more like chimeras than anything else. The pachycephalosaur like head is acknowledged in the species epithet "testaduron", written in the description, which is a reference to the Italian phrase "testa dura" which means stubborn but literally translated it means "hard headed".

I can understand the chimera part because I have a custom species of modern day crocodilian called mosasuchus and the dromaeosaur species called Ankyloraptor, but hard headed, the only large hard headed theropod is the cassowary. And looking at raptor hunting strategies (both past and present) I don't see much uses of a bony head lump for a vulture inspired predator. If it had a thick enough neck structure it could be used for mating rights yes but that is pretty much it for one of the few uses. The thing for ankyloraptor is that the bony ostioderms and tail club limit a bit of speed and a lot of running endurance.

Actually the spikes make it more like stigymoloch than a pachy.

Yes, the idea was was that the head would be used solely for intraspecific combat in order to attract mates or resolve territorial disputes and I used Stygimoloch as a reference for the spikes and skull shape, only basing the dome itself on Pachycehalosaurus. I guess because scavenging birds have featherless heads I didn't want to make its face too plain so I instead covered it in ossified nodules. I also wanted to give the illusion that it is wearing a skull as  a mask, with the head of the creature colored bone white while the rest of its body colored black, brown and gray, which will be more apparent if I ever get around to coloring it in. This makes an aesthetic motif in conjunction with the woman in the picture who would wear a white plague doctor mask modeled after a raven's skull.
