Containment Zones are less than hospitable places even for the well prepared and equipped...the gain of function research done on the more dangerous contagions on the labs prized samples resulted in what was later designated as Hyper-Contagious-Bio-Morphic Disorder...the original virus was infectious enough on its own but the State wanted something more "interesting" they could easily weaponize and disperse cheaply and effectively in a covert manner. they got their wish but it soon became a beast they could not control or predict...the researchers had been overly enthusiastic and edited and tweaked their samples using CRISPR 9 gene editing techniques that involved inactivating a gene's function (knockout), introducing or correcting a SNP mutation, and then overstimulating a reporter tag to an endogenous gene (knock-in)...at first the infection rates progressed as predicted with only minor variants that could be written off as normal...but these were tightly controlled maximum isolated controlled in lab only tests...it was when one of the researchers had the idea of introducing other contagions to the newly hybridized virus to see what would happen... predictably (in hindsight) it proved to be a very very poor choice in the annals of logic...as not only did the introduction of new samples increase the viruses infection rate by multiple factors but it also triggered a cascade of rapid and unpredictable mutations that the researchers had no way of getting ahead of or vaccination for...so when the virus eventually "got out" in the wild...yeah, it was a bad thing.
