Description Here is one of the Joker cards for the Endangered Ark card deck ( [link] ). He's in your outback, eating your numbats.

Taking second place to feral house cats, the red fox is one of Australia's most problematic invasive predator. They were originally brought over in 1855 from Europe for the purpose of recreational hunting. Since then, their numbers have exploded, estimated around 7 million animals. They are responsible for the decline of many small marsupials, including the numbat. The fox is a very adaptable, elusive and prolific animal, and as such, is nearly impossible to contain or control. It continues to decimate populations of native species and there is no foreseeable solution.

Foxes are indeed a problem here. Nice work.

My solution would be for people to just trying to fix this problem and let nature auto-correct itself. It's like trying to remove a bullet you accidentally shot into your leg. You'll only cause more damage.

who cares about all the prey animals that go extinct in the process right? (sarcasm) Human error must be fixed by people.

I don't know. For every man-made problem that mankind fixes, there's another one that mankind made worse, like the whole fiasco in Australia.

I should know BEING australian. When they introduced the species earlier (for purely recreational reasons) they had no idea what kind of unique (lacking apex predator) environment they would mess up. We are much more knowledgeable about our environment now and its either us getting rid of the foxes or all they prey animals going extinct until the foxes overpopulate and die of starvation and disease.

I'm a student in second year of university, and I've taken Ecology lessons last year. My teacher explained to us how predators proliferate more when their prey are abundant in the first place.
So it would be highly improbable for foxes (unlike Occidental humans) to overpopulate and exhaust native flora.

But I'm not sure. We were shown one example, I can't pretend to know the rest.
There's one thing I know though: there are exceptions in everything.

Bear-hybrid In reply to FeatherSpiral [2010-05-25 21:59:38 +0000 UTC]

Regular teachings of biological ebb and flow with the amount of prey fail to calculate human contribution in scavenging animals such as foxes and coyotes. They scavenge from our waste as another food source and populate more than the wild prey can support them and it is very harsh on the non scavenging prey populace.

I must've forgotten about that part. :/
In any case, the Australian biotope should find a new balance and stabilize... in a few thousand years. I'm afraid human society changes too fast for mother Nature to adapt, and humans are too impatient to wait for it. <_<

nice pictuer, love the levle of details. and a good point it showes. humans always try to control natuer, tho they do not understand it. they should learn, if you can't live with natuer, you will die. Never try to controle it, because you will only mess it up.

how about create a habitable and comfortable haven for the red foxes; (a sort of safari, resort.. perhaps name it the "Fox" Resort?) farm the wombat thingies, for them to feed; but since the numbers are thinning, also farm other type of food in this haven; export them as pets; but be sure not to export them to Korea, China or the Viet-nam... um...

Huh, that info about foxes in Australia is kinda sad. You never catch foxes in North America anymore : /. Or at least, not as much as you used to.

Human's are the cause of the majority of eco system "meltdowns".

Let's hope New Zealand never becomes an Australia.
I mean that in terms on animal introductions and such; I'm not trying to stir anything up

Beautiful work; seriously. The detail, the lighting, the colours are just.. sublime.

And I guess it doesn't really help that my mum had a pet fox named Vickie ages ago? (This is Australia)

Personally I love the fox as an animal. They can be quite friendly and playful. It is a shame they're killing all our native species and it is another of humans massive mistakes. I still don't want to see them be hunted and killed by more human interference.

Awesome pic too!

Why do we always have to make these damn tough choices with such harsh consequences?! They say when a predator starts killing it wont stop, guess that goes for us humans as much as anything else.

Ha! Then fox looks like he's thinking, "well excuse me but I didn't ASK to come over to your country." The fox is known as the trickster and this is the best trick yet played on humans, they meant to kill for sport and now through their choice the fox is eating away their country. Buahaha! Okay maybe I'm being a little mean.

Anyway, feel sorry for the numbat but he is cute and stripy, even though he's dead.

Very good job making the fox's fur look so soft!
