Description
A surly looking human stopped Echo and Theo as they reached the top of the gangplank. “Passport please.” His voice was gruff, like a Grizzly Bear’s.
Echo smiled at him, removed the document from one of Theo’s saddle bags and handed it to him. She watched as the human scanned it.
“Welcome aboard the S.S Awoo, Miss Echo.” He handed her back the passport.
“Just Echo.” She corrected.
The human gave a small bow and moved out of the way, allowing them onto the deck of the steamboat. “Allow me to show you to your cabin.”
Echo was impressed with their cabin. There was plenty of room for Theo to move about and there was easily enough height for her to remain in his saddle, if she’d wanted.
“Do you think there will be many others on this journey?” Theo asked as Echo undid his saddle.
“Judging on how long we had to wait before getting into the Post Office, I’d say so, yes.” She dropped the saddle to the floor and Theo shook himself down. “Charlie mentioned a name that we may come across but I can’t remember what it was. He said the Centre has worked with them often. Halv-something.”
“Halverson.” Theo said with confidence. “I remember some of the other Tokotas mentioning it.” The red yeti dire yawned.
“We should see if we can find them.”
“Maybe we should wait until we leave dock. They may not be onboard yet.”
“Good point.” Echo sat on the edge of the bed. Theo settled on the floor, resting his head on the bed beside her.
The S.S.Awoo glided out of the harbour. Echo and Theo emerged from their cabin.
There was a slight sea breeze that ruffled Theo’s shaggy red fur as they made their way onto the deck.
The pair had barely gone a few paces when someone barged passed them. Echo recoiled and felt her head starting to spin. The world began closing in on her.
“Echo, are you okay?” Theo asked, giving her a gentle nudge.
“I will be.” She moved to the railing, taking several slow, deep breaths. She pulled out her herb pouch from under her cape, her heart rate increasing. She opened it, a trembling paw fumbling around inside, trying to find what she was looking for. Finally she withdrew her paw, clutching the herb she needed. She placed it on her tongue, sucked on it for a moment before chewing and swallowing what remained. She took another deep breath to steady herself.
“Better?”
“Yes,” she turned to face him. “I don’t do well in crowds.
“But, Tyonek?”
“Was a city and I was able to leave, if I needed to. On the water, there is no escape.”
“And the Centre?” Theo asked.
“That’s very different. The Centre is more like my village. The Northern Tribes of Baq’dour are isolated, small villages where everyone knows everyone, very much like the Centre.” Echo took a moment to look out over the water. She missed home. “Besides, most of the residents at the Centre are either Baq’ians or Tokotas.”
“Good point.” Theo stood beside her and placed his paws on top of the rail, making him even taller.
Echo took another moment to gather herself. “Alright, let’s try this one again.” There was no sign of anyone in the immediate vicinity, so she felt safe moving from her spot. Theo pushed off from the railings and stayed close by her side as they walked the length of the S.S.Awoo.
At the stern of the ship, they found a black piebald yeti, its handler leaning over the side. Echo knew that look. She took her pouch from under her cloak again, removing a different herb from the one she had taken herself. She placed a paw on the handler’s back so that they knew she was there to help. “Take this, it’ll help.” She said in strained English.
The youngster hesitated for a moment before taking the herb and eating it.
Almost as soon as they had swallowed it, the youngster leaned quickly over the side again but they withdrew a moment later, the herb already having kicked in.
“Thank you.”
Echo smiled. “No problem. I am Echo and that is Theo.”
