Making figurine wings tutorial part 2
Please also refer to: part1
sculptor101.deviantart.com/art…
Finally finished the WIP tutorial of wings for angel figurine, and the process of "pin attachments". Other parts and another figurine will follow next. Enjoy!!
Some tips during the progress, please compare with the pictures:
*After the tip part of wings were baked, follow the same method of previous tutorial for the other half part of wings. Remember to compare both wings often as you go on sculpting.
*Sometimes, it’s better using the craft knife for Sculpey if you need to fix it in right shape. After cut off the edges of feathers, press the clay with the thumb and forefinger, smooth it with tools.
*Continuously build up the layers of feathers from both sides of baked wings. Be careful and pay
attention to the connecting areas (the baked clay and the soft clay). I actually held the baked area to sculpt the unbaked area.
*Before making the detail lines, you may apply some nail polish remover. It makes the surface a bit harden and not too sticky.
*Continuously make the detail lines of feathers according to the baked feathers naturally. Brush some nail polish remover again after finishing the details, this would help get rid of the scraps. Do some touch up if the detail is lost. Cover the baked wings with some aluminum foils when put them in the oven so the color would look about the same after baking.
*I glue (just a little bit of crazy glue) the wings on the back of angel and mark the connecting areas with a pencil before making the pin attachments. Trim the connecting areas of wings if you find the angles are not proper, “the angles are easier to fix at this point”. Take your time for the fitting!
*Check the wings from every angles again. Snap the wings off carefully! Mark rectangles within the connecting areas. Make dimensional trapezoids cuts into the back of angel with craft knife. The baked Sculpey is somehow a bit crispy, be careful with it and your fingers!! Fill out with clay if any rifts in the wall of trapezoids and bake it, cover the whole piece with aluminum foils except the trapezoid areas.
*Put the right length of paperclips in the wings. There were holes on wings that I had made if you recalled from the last tutorial! The paperclips make the connecting pins much more stronger and stay in place. Oh, just drill the holes afterward if you forgot to make them.
*Adjust the paperclips vertically to the trapezoid. Try a few times for the fitting. Prepare some baby powder in a wide open dish.
*Dip and tap the baby powder all over the holes with your forefinger. Tap surplus powder out if any. The baby powder is a really good divider between hard and soft clay. It can be wiped off easily after baked.
*Now put in a piece of similar shape of clay into the hole and press all the way. Be careful not to touch any powder on the top area of soft clay!!! Scrape the powder off if it happens or take the clay out, put some powder and do it all over again. Use a piece of clay to stick the dimensional trapezoid out. Put some powder in and put it back. This is a way to insure the pins will pull out easily without sticking.
*Push the wings all the way into the trapezoids until they totally fit with some excess clay. Use tools to fix and fold the excess clay and also merge it with baked wings.
*Fix both sides of the soft areas in detail matching the baked feathers. Make sure the connecting areas of wings have to be bigger than the trapezoids hole!!! Carefully fit the areas and make sure the wings are in right angles before baking them. You’ll need to redo them if you find something wrong with the angle. So you’d better checked everything before they go in the oven. The reason is simply because the wings are heavy, you wanna bake them in a whole piece so they will be stronger until they go to the casting molds.
*Again cover the whole wing pieces with aluminum foils except the pin areas. The color looks pretty much the same after baked, don’t they?

Many friends had asked me "How do you make figurines, can you show me the process?" I had therefore made a tutorial that divided in several areas of the figurine while I was working on a self project, a project that wasn't base on commission, actually they were sort of work in progress. You may see a lot of photos taking during sculpting. It's long hours of work that I did beside my work. Please look for yourself and compare the differences of how it was made. I tried taking shoots as many as I can at the "turning points" in angles.
I know you might have a lot of questions, the materials, tools, methods... I would suggest you may look for my other tutorials for commonly asked questions. I don't really know how long this project may take. But I'll keep updated as it goes on. The pictures shown an angel figurine in progress. Enjoy!
Title: It has a title but I'm not going to say it now, please wait until you see the whole scene when nearly finish.
Material were used: Super Sculpey, jumbo paperclips, crazy glue, baby powder.

I learned 3 things from you wings tutorial: how to do wings, how to make joints/connections (a big thanks for showing your method ) and third: I should really bake more often and not do all at once. And thank you for the tip with the aluminium foil. I never have thought of that ^^

That's great Sandra!! Thanks for your comments so I can have better idea how the tutorials be read. Every parts of figurine take hours to make, I can only take photos at the turning points that is important I think. But not sure if they are easy to understand. I wouldn't want to send out any possible misconception of messages. ^^

Ah, very interesting! Do you think a technique like that would work for a long thin tail? For I have been considering lately about making resin casts of my sculptures and I the little bit of research I have done makes me think it would be rather hard to deal with a cast of a sculpture with a tail. Have you dealt much with casting or is that something you send elsewhere to do?

I made a lot of silicone molds myself, the long thin tail is always a nightmare for casting. You won't be able to get the air out from the thin area easily. And the resin couldn't get in too. So you might take several times to just get one good tail casting.
Even you have a nice resin casting, it breaks easily afterwards. I'll either make the tail in other material or attach it to its body. You may use thin electric wire with plastic covered instead also.
Please take a look at this to see Mickey's tail that I mentioned: sculptor101.deviantart.com/art…

Wow this is so amazing!
And thank you so much for sharing all this knowledge.
I was allways wondering a bit what the process of making a garage kit looks like.
This really helps a lot, if one wants to make one.

sculptor101 In reply to FlyingFrogFish [2014-07-28 10:19:26 +0000 UTC]
Unless making one of a kind sculptures, most of sculpture goes to molding like silicone molds and cast in resin for duplication coloring. The attachment helps making molds and assembling afterwards. Also for something like garage kits. ^^

Cannot tell you how helpful this guide is. One of the best tutorials I've seen on wings, will most certainly be using for my gryphons and winged hadrosaurs.

Thanks so much for your kind words!! I believe for making gryphons and hadrosaurus would need more pointed and irregular wings and feathers. Please do let me know how my tutorial works!!

They would, more like owl and eagle wings, but just the placement of feathers, how to get the feathers to look a certain way, and detailing them as shown here is extremely helpful. I know exactly how to draw wings. Sculpting them is a whoooooooolllle different ballgame.

It's about the same way you draw, but in different materials and tools. ^^
That's how I "draw" on my sculptures in dimensions.

*cringes but is forever grateful* I started a Gryphon sculpture months ago and half-done doing the wings with paper instead of clay c--this technique, this skill you have, Im so impressed. Its so astounding how you found out how to do this with sculpty.

sculptor101 In reply to Viant-T [2014-07-28 00:50:08 +0000 UTC]
The most problem using Super Sculpey is handling its softness. It's not a good idea trying to get it done at once in a whole figure. So I figured the best way is create some place you can hold on baked clay and adding soft clay. Especially wings. Good luck to your gryphon sculpture!! Let me know if you have any question.

Viant-T In reply to sculptor101 [2014-08-04 02:49:21 +0000 UTC]
Ya, I understand you there. Usually I try to get a sculpture done in one go with 2-3 days of work otherwise the clay breaks back down and gets brittle again before cooking. With the gryph sculpture I cooked it twice, and adding wings on with paper and glue (I don't think the glue will last) But I am so grateful for your tutorials on the wings. I'll be sure to continue idolizing your work, and studying your brilliance.

Hummm... I never had the problem of breaking clay before baking, especially making it in a few days. I usually seal it with a plastic bag and rubber bands or food bag with zippers if I need to leave it for a week or so, it should be ok afterwards if you put it in a sealed bag. Perhaps the clay is not fresh enough. I'll mix it with softener if it gets hard before I use it.
