How to make figurine hairs tutorial

As frequent requests of many friends here, I make this simple tutorial of how to make figurine hairs. Hope you would have the idea of how I make the hairs. There are many different ways making hairs depends on hair style. I'm making wavy long hairs here. I'll make other hair styles when my time allows.  And sorry I only make half of the hairs for your reference.

It is pretty much self explain of step by step in the picture comparison. Although it looks simple but you do need the proportional conception of your figurine to hairs in mind, compare with the size and styles of characters that you are making. Realistic, comic or cartoon etc.

I make a basic head/ face in 20 minus for example, I'm not going to do anything with the face so I leave it unfinished like that. Just focus on making hairs.  I didn't look on any drawings or pictures when sculpt this figurine, just float with the clay, follow how it goes. You can look at your reference or designs if any.

Keep this in mind, no matter how you do it, always start from big portion of hairs first, don't just go right to the detail hair lines. When you are done and happy with big portion of hairs, go making the lines, make it like when you are drawing a sketch.  Make more lines and details in deeper areas. Less lines on raised hairs which will make it look shiny in layers. Don't do the lines all the way. It will end up like yarns or brushes. You may use the knife to cut open some outstretched hairs. Fix a little bit the sharp edges with your fingers or tools.

As you can see, I use wooden tools for hair in angle, that would make better lines without going back and forth to fix it because some tools you use maybe too sharp for it. "Important point: don't make the hairs in crossing lines." Even they look across but they don't in reality. Hairs are in layers, well, usually...

Oh by the way, you may use nail polish remover or denatured alcohol to smooth it out when finished, don't put too much! Do some test on other clay before you apply to your sculptures! Touch up with the hair lines again if necessary, please refer to my tools tutorial #18 and 19 at

Hope this may help you a little. Please advise if you have any suggestion or question. Thank you for watching my friends! Enjoy!!

I think most of sculptor won't do that. I just made some and took photos at turning points. The whole tutorial including the head and face took me an hour to complete. Perhaps I may make video and post on YouTube someday. But that's hard for not allowed making mistakes... ^~^

Dear, I kept my promises, did I? ^~^
Please tell me your opinion, is it easy to understand by pictures? Let me know so I can improve it.

I really enjoy your tutorials and can't think of anyway to improve them!

I must say that I do have a background in sculpting so they are easier for me to understand than perhaps for someone who has never sculpted.  Some people on dA were suggesting that every picture of a tutorial have an explanation, however I don't think that would be necessary in your case.  Your pictures flow smoothly from one step to the next, and it's not difficult to understand exactly what you are doing.  I believe, that most of the people who look at your tutorials are sculptors who wish to improve their skills, and who would also easily understand the pictures.

Thanks a lot, I guess even it looks easy and smooth, but I know it will still be hard to follow. But at least it is a hint fir someone who have no idea how to start. Hairs and face features are both complicated even for me. I'll keep on doing the tutorials, help friends here, and perhaps I may have a nice tutorial book about how to play clay someday. ^^

You are such a talented artist, it makes me happy that you make tutorials for other people just out of curiosity, how would you do curly hair?

I love to share with others so we all learn from each other.
Curly hair? I shall put it on the list also, I was gonna make the hair/ fur for animals first. Just don't know what should go next in busy days.

yeah, I bet you're really busy I just thought I'd suggest curly hair since I'm trying to make my brother a mini sculpture of one of his characters but have no clue how to do the hair lol but I think it's really cool that you actually listen to people's suggestions, I like it when artist's do that, and not a lot do, so you're special in my book

sculptor101 In reply to StellaStarfish [2014-01-11 11:35:24 +0000 UTC]

What kind of curly fair are you going to do? So far I did curly hair for pixies and dolls only. The method is simply making the portion of hair more wavy before hair lines.

sculptor101 In reply to StellaStarfish [2014-01-11 17:03:40 +0000 UTC]

Curly hair for boys... I see what you mean. That would be a challenge... We deal with clay, its hard to make likeness of curly hair of boys. I imagine the hair I have seen of Jamaica's band...

That could be a challenge to me because it takes me a longer time to make a perfect face... But I think I'll make one at least showing how I make the face step by step.  Hmmm... how I'm gonna make it so people would understand? Anyway, I'll put it on my list.
