Description Elemental Poster Series: Earth

These were originally made as a triptic to compliment a client's office, but then one of his coworkers wanted a completing banner, and so came Air.

All four of these banners symbolize the elements Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. These "Elements" have roots in all kinds of classical cultures, ranging from Greece, to China, to Ireland, and to the Americas. The idea was to take the personality, appearance, and metaphorical meaning of the element (i. e. what human ideals or characteristics it represents) and translate it into image. I like these pieces, and I've gotten quite a few comments on them (at one arts festival they stood over six feet tall).

Compositionally, each element has things that tie it to another. They all have their own color scheme that seem indicative of the element (pink and white for Air, black and red for fire, etc.), there are different forms of the element represented (for fire, a candle in a zen garden, a glowing furnace-like thing, burning incense sticks), and different surfaces or textures that also relate (natural materials like wood and dirt for Earth, the sweeping buttresses of the National Cathedral for Air).

Each element has a symbol that appears at least three times in each poster, and these also help characterize the element and give it a concrete (if only metaphorical) existence.

Done in Photoshop. All the photographs are from my backyard and my house (the globules in Water are from my lava lamp) except for the photographs used for Air, which came mostly from the National Cathedral (USA).
