I find it useful to emulate spit-shading working with colored pencils, as ink and watercolor can be a mess to set up and take down and my cats always want to jump into what I'm working on.This is just how I do it, and it's probably not that original, but if it helps you awesome!

I actually just started learning the "real thing", but that seems a alternative for sketching during boring lecture(basically, all of them) I'll give it a try.
