Digimon variants are those which are same to the original digimon but due to some razons their color scheme where change. Main razons are:
It where its initial design.
The writers decided to draw them with different colors for plot effect.
Game developers gave them that color to distinct when playing in multiplayer mode.
Those Digimon were special rewards from special events or campaigns.
They are bosses in events or campaigns.
