Callum looks at ‘his’ older brother. This bike is well below him, not due to arrogance either. But the simple fact that the bike itself wasn’t good enough for his skill level. Somehow he went from being a top rider in the Enduro World Series to an ordinary kid on an entry level mountain bike with a clunky drivetrain, brakes and terrible fork. “At least the frame is half decent,” he repeats to himself, “If everything else breaks, at least that won’t.”
Callum doesn’t even know how he ended up as a teenager. One moment he was plowing towards a tree, the next: gasping for air in an unknown bed at night. He stood up in an attempt to compose himself, thinking it was just a dream. He turned on the lamp beside his bed, and the body he saw extending outwards turned him dizzy. It wasn’t his. Calming himself down, Callum went back into the bed and turned the light off. Hoping sleep would fix everything.
He woke up and sighed in defeat at the same sight as last night. This wasn’t a dream, it was for real. He opened the bedroom door and walked straight for what he guessed was the bathroom. Which it was. Taking a shower, Callum gathered his thoughts and looked down at his new body. It was a healthy body, and unlike his old one: free from scars and aches from previously broken bones.
A few hours later, and after trying his best to calm himself down (thankfully, no adults were around). Callum walked towards the shed and saw his bike. “What a glorious steed,” he laughed, looking at the entry level Specialized. “Oh well. At least the frame is somewhat decent.”
A few minutes later. Callum is back in his natural element. Riding a Mountain Bike. He wants to take it on trails, but years of riding the best bikes in the world have numbed him to the limits of entry level equipment. The brakes would cook, and the fork snap if he maintained the same riding style as the fully custom, factory backed, carbon, full suspension bikes.
“Take it easy. Don’t want to end up in another tree,” he laughs to himself as he puts on a helmet and begins a green trail (the easiest).
