A joint development program by Clan Hells Horses and Clan Wolf in the late 3050's the Clibanarius, named after a Byzantine heavy armoured cavalry type similar to Cataphracts, was based heavily on the Highlander IIC and was in essence an enlarged, and modular version of the Highlander IIC. Although not capable of carrying as many weapons as the Dire Wolf thanks to its heavy but durable standard rated engine the Clibanarius was cheaper and easier to produce and could be produced in the holdings of both Clans within the Inner Sphere, although it relied heavily on weapon imports from the Diamond Sharks.

One of the most easily identifiable differences is the placement of the main armament in the left arm, this did confuse some hostile MechWarrior's who had grown use to targetting a Highlander's right side and arm as a matter of habit to try and disable its most potent weapons.
