Very very good tutorial! Quite professional, as if we are your students and we are being taught by you...which I guess we are!
Expressions are my favorite part of cartooning. The slightest change can make a big impact, especially with simpler faces.

Ahahah, so I'm not the only one that makes the faces they draw. I always get picked on by friends cause I don't realise i'm doing it until someone tells me >_>
Must say, all of your tuts are very helpful and nicely done. I will probably be referencing to them quite frequently actually...xD
but that's a good thing : D

There are all exceptional. More than just instructing, you actually teach - and extremely effectively, at that - by asking questions, such as why I certain expression looks one way and not another. Really great help, thank you very much!

Nice tutorial - hopefully also helpful (there's the theory - and there's the practice. We'll see how much of one makes it into the other ).
And yes, I have caught myself making faces when trying to draw an expression!

Although these drawings are really good the only thing that someone can learn from the tutorial part is that just changing the position of a few things can give a different expression. The drawings would also be great refernces, I was kind of expecting more detail and prescission about the how different positions of a certain facial feature can change the expression. It seemed more like you were just drawing some faces and then adding comments. But good work anyway, I might make a tutorial like this one day once I get my skills up a bit more

Thanks! I tried to make that clear by asking some questions about what is going on in the expressions rather than just saying it plainly like that... sometimes figuring it out yourself can be more fulfilling than having someone point it out directly!

That is true, there are many people that don't like figuring stuff out themselves which is irritating.

There's a really smart cartoonist/art theorist named Scott McCloud, and in a book he wrote called "making comics," he outlined a system for mixing and matching all facial expressions from 6 "emotional primaries." About a year ago, this group of programmers created a little thing called "the grimace project" where you can build faces using this system. If you're into really getting into the heart of facial expressions, check it out! link: the grimace project

Great tutorial really helpful, I generally have a hard time with faces, but I'm practicing still. I have a general question, How long did it take you to develop your own style, I've been drawing for a while now but my style keeps changing I can't keep it the same at all. Do you have any advice? thanks

shingworks In reply to SilverB-2814 [2010-07-01 14:50:32 +0000 UTC]
My style did the same thing for many years, it didn't settle down until 2008 or so (after years and years of drawing). The only thing I can suggest is to draw all the time as much as possible and expose yourself to many different types of art. A lot of people compare my art to the Avatar cartoon style, but I'd actually developed that naturally after years of getting my influences from different places. Once you're brain is satisfied with that, it will stop fooling around and you'll stick to that style. I'm fairly sure that my style came about because I drew so much and so often! Hope that helps.

That does yeah, and thanks for your reply I really appreciate it. And I will take you up on your advice, I draw quite alot generally but I'll take a look at other styles and art, hopefully I will settle down Thanks again
