"art is a representation of both meaning and expression of meaning, this is arbitrary. to post a blank canvas, and say it represents the emptiness of modern art, you are saying that art can be the lack of something, the complete emptiness of anything, and you are correct by the current standard of "art"
but you can also say that these colors are art, that the vibrant nature or coordination of lines making up an image *or words* makes it art, that it is the structure that makes it art because it is beautiful. this is also arbitrary, as it says that anything that makes up anything is what makes it art.
this is a contradiction, though not mutually exclusive it does put into question the legitimacy of art existing as an entity and not just a concept pushed onto things by humans.
if "art" exists, it must be individual of contradicting conditions, or to at least be objectively testable, provable. it is not.
this does not in essence disprove art as existing, it simply means we have yet to build a solid case for what makes it art without using improper logic
i believe what you made is art, what i do NOT know, is what makes it that.
is it the lines? is it the image it becomes when those lines are put together? is it the meaning you SAY the image has? is it the absence of some quality that prevents something being art? *like darkness being the absence of light*Β
is art simply the existence of perceived meaning? does our perception create meaning?
possibly.
if art is not a solid objective thing that exists, and more a LABEL, then yes it can exist due to us putting standards on them *arbitrarily* and having certain things deemed art, while others are not...that is the system we currently have.
in conclusion
art as it currently stands is a subjective system of labels arbitrarily stapled onto things and rarely argued against due to the vagueness of those descriptions.
