Description She had trained, yet when it truly mattered, she was weak. Her heart clenched painfully. “Another couple day’s march and we’ll be at Morgant’s Rest,” her savior croaked out, his voice sounding as if it had been raked over rocks. “The fortress is still manned by the Vallenburg Order. You’ll find safe haven there.”

She remained silent. The muscles of her face twitching and contracting like worms as she wrestled with her latent grief and realization that she was now alone with naught but her father’s old armour and his sword. What was she to do now? Her eyes prickled and she blinked rapidly in fierce denial of the tears that threatened to appear.

“What will I do there?” She spoke at length in a tone laden with exhaustion.

“Live,” came the simple response.

She gave no answer.

“I know in this moment these are words you do not care to hear, but I will utter them nonetheless. The way you fought would make any warrior proud but you were outmatched. There is no fault to be given.”

“There is,” she replied softly. “I could have been more prepared. My brother would have lived otherwise.”

“Perhaps” the knight’s voice rasped out. “But dwelling on what could have been is a slow but sure poison. Acknowledge your family’s passing and strive to live. Do not squander your gift of life.”

A long shuddering breath escaped her lips. “I still hear his screams…”

“Yes,” the knight murmured. “You will for a while but time will mend you for your spirit is strong.”

No more was said as melancholy silence descended upon the pair.
