Chapter 1

A gentle breeze passed through the sky, and Damian Telemachus opened his eyes to a new morning. "Today's the day... my first major tournament..." Damian rolled to the left. "I don't want to get up today." He closed his eyes and slowly drifted into a slumber, until he heard a voice calling.

"Hey Damian! It's time to wake up!" Damian ignored the voice. "Damian, get up! DAMIAN! GET UP!" Damian felt a strong kick against his backside. He jerked away, and sat up. "You didn't have to kick me..." He opened his eyes and flinched. Leaning forward was Cassandra Alexandra, his long-time friend.

"C-C-Cassie! What are you doing here? In my garden hideaway?" Damian retreats to his garden hideaway when he has much on his mind.

"I'm here to wake you up, dummy! Your tournament starts in an hour!" Damian sat there thinking about what she just said...then it registered.

"THE TOURNAMENTS IN AN HOUR! COME ON, YOU HAVE TO HELP ME GET READY!!!" Damian leaped up and ran inside. Cassie laughed and followed him in.

The tournament Damian spoke of is none other than the Greek Gladiator Qualifier Tournament. Four of these take place in four corners of Greece. The top 16 from each tournament move on to the Quarter Finals at Sparta. The top 16 move on to the Semi Finals in Athens. Then the Final Four move on to the Finals in the Ottoman Empire, the ruler of Greece. The Finals took place at Istanbul, where the Sultan would watch the four fighters fight to the death. The winner was granted the title of 'Great Warrior' and given a Holy Weapon of their choosing. The winner would also become one of the Sultan's bodyguards, until the next 'Great Warrior' comes.

Damian strapped on his blue-gold gladiator armor with the help of Cassie, and in ten minutes, he was ready for battle. Strapped to his back was his grandfather's old halberd, and resting at his hip were the throwing daggers given to him by Cassie and Sophie last month.

Cassie stood back to see how he looked. "You look great! Come on, we don't have much time to get to the colisiem!"

Damian looked at the antique clock on the wall. "Come on! Let's go!" Damian and Cassie ran out of the house in the direction of the colisiem. Forty minutes later, they arrive just in time.

A large horn blew twice, indicating the start of the first round. Damian signed in, and together, Damian and Cassie headed for the stands. Cassie turned to Damian. "We made it!" Damian smiled. "If it weren't for you, we wouldn't have made it. Thanks Cassie." Cassie smiled back.

They watched the first few preliminaries. The main match of interest featured a mysterious cloaked man known as Dyonysius. At the start of the match, Dyonysius pulled out twin sabres, and threw one at his opponent, and seemingly threw the other one nowhere. His opponent jumped away from the first sabre, and was instantly pierced by the second sabre.

Cassie turned to Damian. "He's really good at predicting movements..." Damian seemed flustered. Cassie patted his back. "Don't worry! You'll beat him!" Damian grinned. "Thanks, Cassie."

Moments later, a paladin came searching through the crowd, calling the names of the next two fighters: Damian Telemaschus and Nikolai Anthony. Damian stood up. "Well, wish me luck!" The paladin led Damian away, and Cassie cheered him on. "Good luck Damian!" A few moments later, Nikolai and Damian walked into the arena on seperate sides. Cassie continued to cheer from the stands.

"Go Damian! You can beat him!" Cassie looked at Nikolai, and noticed something odd. Nikolai had no armor, nothing but a tunic, pouch, and knife. What's that kid thinkin'? Oh well, it means an easy win for Damian!

The horn blew twice, indicating the start of the match. Damian pulled out his grandfather's halberd. Nikolai dropped his hand to his pouch while locking eyes with Damian, as if daring him to attack.

Damian lowered his halberd. "You're being foolish, trusting whatever's inside your pouch!" Nikolai just smiled. "I'm not worried. Go ahead and attack." In response, Damian charged Nikolai sensing something was wrong. Damian leaped to the side, seeing poisonous darts miss his face by less than an inch.

"Not bad." Damian grinned. Damian dropped his halberd and pulled out his knives. Damian leaped forward, jumping from side to side at random intervals.

"That's the way Damian!" Cassie understood Damian's thinking; the halberd would just slow him down and make him a lumbering target against Nikolai. Go Damian! Too bad Sophie's not here to see this!

Nikolai continued to throw darts from his pouch, but couldn't hit any of Damian's vulnerable points. The darts bounced harmlessly off his armor, with a loud PING. "Keep still!" Nikolai was frustrated.

Damian jumped passed Nikolai and slashed with his knives. Nikolai pulled out his own knife just in time to stop one of them, but the other knife hit dead on, slashing Nikolai's chest. Nikolai fell to the floor. Damian turned around, and kneeled down.

Nikolai rolled to look up at Damian. "Just finish me...end it quickly...please..." Damian looked confused. "I don't kill people. It's pointless." Nikolai attempted a smile but fainted. Damian dragged him over to the herbal garden, hoping one of the maidens could cure him.
