Do you just copy it or do you start from your skeleton lines? I think you should practice your skeleton lines when you copy. For example, you want to draw the Sonic head, and you start out with first a circle and add eyes...etc. If you start from your skeleton lines while copying, it will help you with your proportions and poses when you draw freehand. ^^
