An aspiring bard, Lars VanVoder is the kid brother of Lydia VanVoder. Skilled at playing a number of instruments, and his big sister being infamously known by the nickname "Violent VV", Lars ended up picking up the nickname "Violin VV". As well as being his sister, Lydia also has served as his protector and primary caretaker. Tormented by his and Lydia's older brother, Lyle VanVoder, the two of them left home together and found a new place to live.

Unlike his siblings, he has no interest in fighting, though he loves watching Lydia fight and playing music to inspire her during battle. As the brother of Lydia, Lars was increasingly the target of hate as more people came to fear and distrust her. Eventually, not wanting Lars to have to live in fear, Lydia turned herself in. But, consumed by loneliness, Lars one day dared to leave town. He couldn't free Lydia on his own, and lacked the funds to pay for mercenaries to break her out of prison, so he set off in search of another way to set her free.

One day, while Lars was out adventuring, the door to Lydia's cell was opened by a mysterious force, a twinkling silvery light the likes of which she had never seen before. But when she broke out of the prison and went home, Lars was nowhere to be found. Asking around town, Lydia discovered that Lars had left town some time ago and hasn't been seen since. With no leads, she eventually learns of a tower consisting of five floors, each one guarded by a powerful foe, with the promise that those who make it to the top will find what they need there. Needing a few good fights and a lead on the whereabouts of Lars, she promptly set forth for the tower.
