The village elder who raised Casino and Mint Grayleaf, Set Morpheu hid numerous terrible secrets.

When Casino and Mint's parents, Nevan and Ada Grayleaf, grew suspicious of the elder, they snuck into his home to investigate, and stumbled upon more than they bargained for. Sneaking up behind them, the elder delivered a fatal blow, thus ensuring their silence. Led to believe that their parents left on a journey and never returned, the elder adopted the two children who's parents he had secretly murdered in cold blood.

Set Morpheu was not a human being, but in fact a centuries-old demon who used his powers of deception to keep the villagers from noticing that he had been masquerading as their elder for hundreds of years.

The prophecy that had been passed down in the village for generations was believed to speak of a final descendant of the Grayleaf clan, a boy who would make a wish and become the hero of prophecy. For hundreds of years, the elder had known full well that the prophecy actually spoke not of a hero, but of a great destroyer that would genocide all life, and it was his intention to await the birth of the final descendant and deceive him into following the path of the destroyer.

Set Morpheu's name is an anagram of Prometheus, a name believed to mean "forethought", and that of Greek mythology's titan god of fire, a trickster figure who defied the gods by appropriating a dangerous force and unleashing it upon the world. It is also a reference to Set, the Egyptian god of storms, disorder, and violence, who murdered his own kin.
