I've been really slammed at work lately and have gotten behind, but I wanted to do something real quick for the #savederpy thing. I've been meaning to paper her up for awhile, and I figure now is appropriate.I didn't like the voice and would be glad to see it changed (hire BaldDumboRat, imo!), but cripes. I can't help but facepalm when I think that the silly little background character that messes things up all the time finally got to get a voice, get a name, and a little time at the forefront... And that turned into a fiasco, too. Poor Derpy, you derpin'.
But yeah. Hopefully everyone will breathe, calm down, and just have fun with our silly little pony cartoon.
Anyway, I'm not all nerdragey about it, but I sure hope they keep her in! Write it off as a derp, change her name/voice if they have to, and keep on trucking. The shoutout was a big enough of a surprise, so even if it was a thing that won't end up being canon to save the character, I'm happy.
Alrighty, back to commissions! Should make some good progress this week.

It's not an attempt to get in with internet culture at all. The name wasn't Hasbro's idea. Derpy was just a fan name until they made it canon.

1: the reason why Derpy's voice seemed off is because Tabitha St Germaine though Derpy was colt. and she based "him" off of a kid who lived next door to her.
2: The takedown of welovefine tshirts is a legitimate copyright issue. there is a clothing line or something like that on the american east coast that was copyrighted the name "Derpy" so this is a legitimate issue that hasbro has to deal with.
TL;DR: this has nothing to do with butthurt gryphons complaining about a goofy sounding cartoon character. this is a legitimate copyright issue which can have legitimate consequences for people.

I didn't find anything wrong. Its not like they were aiming to offend anyone and I'm sure that's the last thing they would want to do. If people are going to get mad about Derpy why did no one get mad at Homer Simpson? Anyway I find this really cute, good job.

Derpy is the best pony, and I'd hate for anything to happen to her.
As for her portrayal, my biggest issue was the slurred speech. The voice, I dislike, but I could see it working... maybe... if the slur was dropped.

Some people got offended by Derpy's name when she became canon, saying it's an insult to disabled people, and are trying to have her removed from the show. :<

I was under the impression that it was more her manner of speech and clumsiness that got her labeled as mentally disabled, not her name. "Derp" is just an internet term that means "I messed up" or "Whoops" or something along those lines; it never had anything to do at all with mentally disabled people.
And what bout this: even if she were, someone else (can't remember who) here on DA brought up a good point. For everyone who's getting offended, what exactly are they upset about? That a mentally disabled person is on the show? And wouldn't that imply that she shouldn't be? It's like saying that she shouldn't be on the show at all because of her disabilities, which is much more offensive than anything else.
Not directed at you, per se, just my two cents on the matter in general.

Not so much that were was a mentally disabled pony as much as some thought she was being portrayed negatively. Which I can understand thinking, because so far ponies have mostly been irritated or slightly annoyed at her. It didn't help the voice made for a really unfortunate combination. "Unfortunate" because of course neither the scriptwriter nor Tabitha meant for Derpy to come of that way - the writer has a disabled child! - but I still winced when I first heard her voice.
That said? I haven't seen any actual proof of people actually wanting her to be removed. Some have mentioned a petition, but apparently it's full of trolls . From everything I've seen so far most of the ruckus comes from bronies.

The voice was what bothered me, myself, just because it came off as a bit excessive even though the actress meant well and was giving a nod to a clumsy kid that lives on her street or something to that effect. I've yet to read anything concrete regarding her removal besides pony fans freaking out, so idk.

I love Derpy. Or, at least, I love the fanon hardworking mother who may or may not have a worse condition than strabismus, but the voice... yeah.

Hmm, yeah, that's more understandable. Though I honestly think it should be taken with a grain of salt; the only one who's been outright exasperated with her has been Rainbow Dash, at least to my memory, and that's just how Rainbow is sometimes. But she isn't mean-spirited, and I think that her acting that way pretty much reinforces the fact that Derpy isn't meant to be portrayed as mentally disabled in the first place. Of course, most people who'd get upset over this probably wouldn't take that into consideration (and if it's for a sensible reason, I'm not blaming them for it).
But yeah, I agree; I haven't seen anyone actually upset over this, which is actually a bit surprising to me. I would have definitely expected FOX or something to pounce on this right away.

In issues like this, most people are taking it into consideration. They also remember that SJ and people aren't black-and-white. Intent doesn't automatically make something better.
Warning, upcoming TL;DR!
To use a metaphor, if I hurt your foot by stepping on it without noticing, it doesn't matter that I didn't intend to do it. It still hurt. Now, since you think it probably wasn't intentional you just go "hey, mind stepping off?", and I apologize and step off. That's what most people do. The thing is? I've seen people - not just MLP-fans, mind you - who, at your polite request, will go "well, I didn't intend to do it, so I don't see what the problem is!" and then refuse to even acknowledge your foot hurts, much less step off it or apologize. Because they think otherwise, everyone will think they're a bad person.
What makes the Derpy-thing especially odd (and slightly worrying) for me is that there wasn't even foot-stepping going on. A few people went "hey, can we acknowledge this wasn't the best portrayal?" and bronies went "OMG NOTHING'S WRONG YOU'RE THE ABLIST ONES OMG CENSORSHIP* STOP OPPRESSING US". I love Derpy, but dear god you'd think someone suggested to have her go through Cupcakes and Rainbow Factory at the same time! I'm also slightly worried about how people are acknowledging that derp is starting to be used as a mentally disabled insult, and instead of planning to stop that they just go "oh well can't stop it". Maybe not completely, but at least from being widespread.

You know, FOX not jumping on it is another thing that makes me think this is much smaller than fandom think it is. I mean, they love to jump on anything that makes the other sides look even the slightest bit bad, and yet they ignore something from one of the few fandoms that's gotten media attention.

The reason people connect it to mentally disabled people is because a lot of the time, when pictures are posted that have people making silly faces in them, it's linked to the fact that some people with mental disabilities can't control their facial movements. I agree with your thing about the internet term, though. That is how it started, and then it became the pictures of silly faces, and then people got their bowties in a knot about it and that's what started this whole calamity XD. Just bringing that little thing to light, since not a lot of people know why it's being connected.

actually, it turns out that there is actually a brand of clothing that copyrighted the term "derp". it is pretty silly, as this group was started by a few teenagers not too long ago, and it seems pretty silly. still, it is legal grounds for a case, so Hasbro is treading very carefully around this one.
