This deconstruction of an ideal face is much appreciated. I always wondered why my proportions were always off!

You're welcome. A large part of those patterns were discovered by Leonardo Divinci. I've just expounded upon them greatly

lately i have been 'lossing' my skills its just that when i draw now i feel like its incorrect which it is but stuff that i have been practicing for along time now is becoming difficult ...grrrrrr.... 0_____0 I THINK AND HOPE this tutorial will work

Snigom In reply to lovelykat [2008-06-24 21:02:13 +0000 UTC]

Trust me you are not alone in your frustration. You are experiencing exactly what I have experienced. The weird thing is that you can practice ALL day for a month and not retain anything except what you JUST practiced, that day. A week later...its gone. But here's the catch, you DID retain it. In time your mind will bring it back out when you least expect it. It happens to me ALL the time. 2 months later...WA-LA I can now magically draw that which I practiced months ago.

Another answer...which requires a bit of faith...is that you have to be cautious of your mode of thinking when you are 'racticing'. By this I mean you can't day dream or worry about other things when you are practicing. Your focus has to remain fixed on what your drawing. In fact, you have to become aware of how you're holding the pencil, of how it moves across the paper, the position of your hand, etc. You learn mostly from muscle memory. If you use Muscle memory; it is memory that can fade away in time. You have to memorize things in your head for it to stick.

Sorry to ramble on

lovelykat In reply to Snigom [2008-06-28 00:07:32 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for you comment I think that once i pass this phase. I never knew that muscle memory could help lol. I have also noticed that sometimes when I am drawing I put on a certain type of song or music that pertains to the piece. So I can see how my mode of thinking would affect the my art lol and no you didn't rabble on I thought it was helpful.

thank you so much for this, I couldn't get a female profile, and I found this that explains that and much more! you've managed to keep it to a simple number of rules of thumb that are vital and more than enough to make a variety of faces correctly.
it's kind of you to make something to teach others.

i'm glad to let you know i appreciate it
madman? did they think the proportions were wrong, or it was mad to do work for free?
i think they're both accurate and handy easy-to-remember tips, thank you for making them. i've printed several to work from and get used to anatomy

Thank you very much! I really do treasure these kinds of comments because they let me know what works and what doesn't. Especially when I have been told that these are the workings of a madman . No one on DA mind you, this used to be a close friend.

do usually make your faces/heads this way?
don't get everytime the same think don't they?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Snigom In reply to Nabana [2008-04-03 23:04:47 +0000 UTC]

No, they are just guidelines for a "general' or 'standard' face to start with. In my book i will be discussing how these features can be altered to make 'different' types of people

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nabana In reply to Snigom [2008-04-03 23:15:42 +0000 UTC]

but the eyes can be smaler.. more far away from each other
the lips thicker, the mouth larger

but i never so you work, I don't know how you do it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Snigom In reply to Nabana [2008-04-03 23:41:34 +0000 UTC]

Agreed, I control that with the facial triangle that makes of the eyes and nose. However, no matter how they are positioned the space in between the eyes are always the same size. The space to the sides of the eyes can freely fluctuate.
