Description 1. A Eureka Special

Writer: Niamh Sharkey

Director: Maeve Garvan

Date: October 28, 2022

Synopsis: "Eureka runs her mother's restaurant."

It's time for something to eat. The main course is this episode. It's about Eureka and company running Paleo's while her mother is out. However, she finds it hard to run the restaurant. This episode gives us two well written messages:

1. Don't underestimate how difficult something is.

2. Take the time to make a quality product. Don't rush things.

Let's break this down.

First Half:

We start with Eureka being impressed with how Roxy managed to feed 47 happy customers tonight. Considering all the empty watermelon shells, it's no surprise that she's feeling exhausted. She always gives it her all with her job. In comes some of her friends, those being Olive (voiced by Aydrea Walden), Ivy (voiced by Cree Summer), and Sierra (voiced by Ryan Michelle Bathe). They wahr her to take part in cocoa bean picking season at Tiger Tail Meadow. Of course, they know her too well, and predict that she'll say she's too busy to close up the restaurant for even one afternoon. They say this in a playful manner, where they know she likes to work hard, but also doesn't take the time to take a leisurely break. Eureka says that she'll run the restaurant for her. When she says it's a big job, she says that she's an inventor and that the restaurant is like one big machine that invents food. Rollo says that he and Murphy will help, which she accepts. This all shows how Eureka can be smart, but also overconfident. She knows that running a restaurant isn't easy, and at least has the common sense to call for backup. However, the fact she thinks she can invent her way out of something that could happen shows that she assumes that there's always an easy solution out of any situation. Still, you give her props for not thinking she can do everything on her own.

She gives her the basics of what to know, such as the recipe book, a board to write the daily specials, and a cooler for the fresh ingredients. It can get hectic when it's busy, but Eureka says she can invent her way out of anything. Pepper, Barry, and KB also come by to help, making her more confident. It's here where everyone sings "We've Got This". It's a triumphant song about how they'll be able to get through this by working together as a team. You can definitely see this in action with how she helps everyone put everything out, such as dishes to clean and dishes to put out. Even if she has the big ideas and overconfidence, she has the humility to see that everyone working together is what will make this a success. Barry puts up a starfish rating so that people can say what they think of their experience. Now it's time for the customers. Bog, Clod, and Link come by. Unsurprisingly, Bog asks where Eureka's mother is, and becomes uncertain when he sees that she's running things today. Given how closed minded he is, this is no surprise. It doesn't help that Pepper says they can do this because of how she's made her own lunch before. I appreciate the confidence Pepper, but making lunch for yourself is different from doing it in public for others. Dima and Verna come by for lunch as do Ohm and Chee. Dima and Verna tell KB that they want to order beet burgers, but when she says "super", he thinks that they want soup. Yeah, KB may have the willingness to help out, but he also has a rather simple vocabulary and excitable nature that makes it hard for him to take things in. Ohm and Chee ask Pepper what the special is, but she doesn't remember what today's special is. She's not being dumb. She just has hard time remembering multiple things at once. She tends to focus more on one thing at a time. As such, she just tells Eureka to make 4 specials, 3 specialers, and 1 specialist. Eureka thinks that she can just look in the recipe book, but she sees that it will take a lot of time since there's so many instructions and ingredients. For as smart as Eureka is, she tends to underestimate how hard a situation can be in thinking that just having natural talent and hard work can get you through.

Second Half:

She doesn't act great under pressure because of this. She just tries to make something with ice cubes and tomatoes before thinking she needs apples. With Clod getting hungry, Eureka speeds things up. Pepper comes by to see if she has anything done, and she doesn't. Everyone is getting rather annoyed, and even Clod and Ohm are less calm. She thinks that she should make something to help gather ingredients and make the dishes quickly. She makes the "mix and match meal maker" so that they can make three meals at once, all fast. She's becoming really desperate to fix things up. Then again, she's never really been put in a position of authority before. She would think that speed helps to positively influence skill when that's not always the case. She creates bowls of colored mush that Murphy finds tasty, so she makes more. Yeah this is not cool. She thinks that she can the same level of quality of her mother's food in less the time. It just shows how desperate she's become to curb the mistakes she's made. She's letting her ambitions to keep things together and make everyone happy cloud her better judgement.

Things aren't moving fast enough, so Pepper puts Murphy on roller skates. Eureka thinks that things will turn out pretty well because of how fast everything is moving. Everyone tries the food, which they find to taste bad. Barry and Pepper think that someone else besides Murphy should've tasted this since mammoths will eat anything. Yeah taste testing should be done by people who have more well developed taste buds. Barry asks Ohm and Chee what they think of the food. While they don't try to be insensitive, he thinks it could be a good science project for school and she thinks she could write either a mystery or horror book about it. Bog gives a zero starfish review. Eureka says she'll cook them new meals and Barry will give them free dessert. She remembers the pies, but when Pepper grabs one, she accidentally trips on Murphy and hits Roxy just as she comes in. That's not good. As everyone else cleans up, Eureka tells Roxy that she couldn't do this because of how everything and everyone came in all at once. Yeah even with a team behind her, she still did poorly because of how she didn't take enough time to make sure that everything was in place. She says that she tried to invent food as good as hers, but faster. Roxy then says that this took a long time since she couldn't cook or run a restaurant correctly the first time. She says that Eureka could do this someday with a bit of practice, showing how it's never too late for anyone to be successful. That's a pretty reassuring thing to say. She sees the meal maker and thinks that they can combine their skills. The meal maker is a good idea. There just needed to be some proper guidance to keep everything in check. They sing a reprise of "We've Got This" as they combine ingredients and clean everything up. Eureka lets both Murphy and KB try the chocolate porridge, which they like. It's always good to get a second opinion on something. They give the porridge to everyone else, which they like. Everyone gives a five starfish review. Now that is what I calm satisfying.

2. Be My KB

Writer: Billy Eddy

Director: Marten Jonmark

Date: October 28, 2022

Synopsis: "KB rooms with Barry."

It's time to room up. This episode involves KB living with Barry in his room, but he's not easy to live with. The episode gives a solid message on how living with someone can be fun even if it's not easy. You should take the time to work things out. Let's break things down.

First Half:

We start with Eureka, Pepper, Barry, and KB playing a game of catch with a mango. KB becomes champion when he catches it, which Barry compliments him on. They make a good team here because of how KB has raw speed while Barry can move meticulously. It starts to rain, and everyone heads to their homes. Barry tells KB to go to his perch, but the wind blows it away. Being the nice guy that he is, he goes inside to ask his parents if he can stay, and he says that they said yes. He's excited to be roommates with KB, and the latter jumps around, almost going into his drums. They do well playing drums together, showing how they can connect through creativity and passionate energy.

We then see that KB is fun to be with, he's not the best to live with. Barry gives him a pillow for him to use as a bed and chair, but he jumps up and down and makes the feathers fly. Barry shows him his rock collection, and he eats the sand. He tries to show him his neat bed and his shelf with clothes and safety tools, but he jumps around and makes a mess. He's letting his excitement and curiosity get the better of him, so it's no surprise he's making a mess. As Barry brushes his teeth, KB spits his gargle on the floor. He gives Barry something to clean it with, but it's one of his clothes. This scene shows that he's at least aware enough that he can make mistakes. He's just again so excited in making up for them that he's not thinking straight. He then takes the bed for himself, but more from ignorance rather than trying to do this on purpose. He then reluctantly says he'll sleep on the floor, but KB makes whistling noises. Barry tells KB to be quiet, but he instead says the phrase and repeats every sound he hears. It's not intentional on his end, but this behavior is more suitable for the outdoors. This scene also shows that Barry is not assertive when voicing his discomfort with something. He focuses too much on pleasing others and making sure to not let anyone down. Barry wakes up to see that he made a mess with seeds that he ate. It's the straw that broke the camel's back.

He tells Eureka and Pepper what happened last night just as they're painting. He wanted to have a good human animal relationship like they do with Murphy and Dipply. It's good that he's talking to his best friends that can relate to his situation. They sing "The Get Along Song" and say how living with a pet isn't easy, but it's worth it. The upbeat nature of the song combined with their harmonies helps out. You can see this in action with how Eureka cleans up Murphy's fur and Pepper becomes a living playmate for Dipply. Both talk about having thinning patience and frustration before saying to look past what went wrong and work things out. It works because of how both of them are expressive with how they feel, yet also sensitive enough to the needs of others. It's nice to see. They tell him to set some ground rules to keep his cool, and that he should also be able to compromise. He should also share his thoughts and feelings if he starts to feel some frustration. That is definitely good advice to live by.

Second Half:

Setting ground rules for KB is easier said than done. He sees KB up in the air and tells him to come down. He sets some ground rules by putting paint marks on everything. Blue means he can touch it, yellow means to not touch it unless there's an emergency, and red means to not touch it at all. He asks if he understands, but he says "all", which he thinks means he can touch everything. Yeah, he's prone to misinterpreting things rather easily. He tells Eureka and Pepper that things went well until he sees that he touched everything in the room. He then decides to compromise by dividing up the room with a line, but he eats the line. It doesn't help that this is edible paint. He tries to tell him how he feels, but he just repeats what he said. Talk about being literal minded. He asks Eureka and Pepper if they can rebuild the perch so that he can have a comfy, dry place to live.

They show off the new perch, which has a comfy bed. This all shows that he didn't want to get rid of him. He just wanted him to behave and curb his wild behavior while still being comfortable. KB feels sad since he won't be roommates with him anymore. Things get better inside. Pepper shows him some footprints made of paint, and she likes them. He thinks that they have a pizzazz. Barry sees that him messing around with the bed and playing the drums with him was pretty cool. He got to go wild with what he liked. Barry sees that he'll miss him when Eureka and Pepper leave, and they say that living with a pet is fun even if it's not easy. This scene helps us to really understand Barry's position. Even if he's all about being cautious and meticulous, he still likes to goof around and have fun. KB might've been a handful, but he always tried to make things better. It's sweet. Barry tells KB that he wants to be his roommate again, and lets him live in his room as long as he has the perch. They'll also compromise. They're doing this as equals, not as master and pet, which is so exciting. They set up the room, and Eureka and Pepper give him a picture of all of them with their pets. At least now he has a momento of all of them. They then play the drums together. This ends the episode well.
