Description
Umm...My reasoning for this is that I haven't drawn a mermaid in a very long time. So here's a new mermaid. ^^
Normal HB pencil then fixed up in photoshop.

They could...
But I can't see this sort of mermaid with webbed fingers.
Maybe a scaled fin on her back...

She's gorgeous! I looooove all the texture on her, like with her tail and her hair, and your pencil shading is impeccable.

I think that's one reason why I like it so much. There's no.. "So what is she doing?" It all turned out very obvious.

This is great. The rays of sun beaming down are beautifull done, also how the tail tapers off into two curls is wonderful. Great drawing very well done

Excelent drawing, and a bit of a more unique mermaid (yay, no standard whale flippers XD). Now I could start whining about small things as shade should be darker there and there, but it isn't really needed.
Anatomy: Good
Composition: Good
Shading: Good, though the back could use a bit more.
The only thing I miss in this picture is a good background. Underwater scenes aren't easy to draw, but the it would add to the picture. How about just some blurred rocky formations? It worked for my mermaid XD.

Hehe... I could..
But I hate backgrounds. >_<
I was actually considering that when I sketched the image but I just never did.
Thanks for the comments. ^^

Wow, I can't believe it was pencil....and just an HB at that.
Proof that even mermaids worry about their abs?
Seriously, beautiful shimmer effects, and you have shading nailed.
Tech notes, etc.:
The water...well, I would not have guessed there was water, except there's a mermaid. If you don't wish to include something obviously marine to anchor the location, such as seaweed, fish, etc, that's fine, but water is never perfectly calm or clear, especially ocean water. The ocean is very murky. If she's close to the surface, there's caustics.
Her hair, while lovely, is also not obeying the physics of water. Which helps reinforce that you don't 'see' the water. Hair floats. Like seaweed, it sways, bloats, and reaches for the surface.
In unrelated tidbit, why is she posing? And who for? Always consider this when capturing figures. Posed or natural, aware or unaware, observed or interupted. You don't have to reveal the answer in the work, but know it in your mind. It makes an enormous difference.

Sotalean In reply to forbidden-dragon [2004-10-28 19:55:33 +0000 UTC]
Well I never thought of her as posing for anyone. She's just sitting in her little corner of the water thinking about something that's bothering her. ^^
For the hair
I had never really intended to finish this image. But I did... even with the funky hair. I already knew that the hair was messed up. ^^ But by the time I decided to finish this, I already had the hair outlined to the point where it would never have erased properly. *shrugs*
Umm.. the water:
I actually have never heard of caustics before. O_o T'is strange indeed. I'll look it up and see what I can do.
Thanks for the comments ^^

About the point of no erasing:
*laugh* I noticed in high school that my sketching, even finished sketching, was so light as to not be seen from a few steps away. I tried going darker, but it was hard to keep working over something until it was dark enough....So for long time I didn't really sketch at all, but I spied a pencil set one day out oogling art supplies. I've taken up 5B and 8B and such. It's hard to erase, and to adjust to, but I can sketch comfortably and the results can be seen
Lately, I've been playing with free sketching (start doodling without any idea of drawing something in particular, just let the pencil go and see what you get), and I figured it would work best if I just enhanced, never subtract ie. eraser banned. The results were fun, and nothing like my usual style, which was interesting But I still love my putty eraser
Caustics is just the physics term tor when light beams converge under water. Look in a shallow swimming pool on a sunny day, and you can see the light patterns. The same patterns happen in the ocean (and other large bodies of water). Anything near the surface will get the effect of caustics. Heck, if you bathroom light is bright enough, you can prolly see them in the tub

Flawless, the way the ear flows with the hair is a gorgeous touch. I like the faint sparkles and her position in the water, definetly not an easy one. Amazing job hun, and easy - Definetly a pencil drawing from a true artist
