[ Ch.6 – Long Trips; Contemplations of the Impracticability of Modern Transportation. ]This is the interesting part. No really, I promise. You will read this, and you will think ‘That was interesting’, and then you will tell all your friends how interesting this was, and they will read it, to, and think the same thing, too, because it really is interesting. Really.
I had to ride along with my sister, mother, and step-dad back to my sister’s college the other day. She came down for the football game. There were hugs and greetings and many ecstatic faces. It had only been a few weeks. And so we went to the football game, my sister and I. She drove me there, and then we parted, so she could go talk to her friends and I could go talk to mine. No one ever watches the football games. And so I talked with my friends, cheered when the crowd cheered, and then it was over. We lost. I think. I’m not sure.
So anyways, the game was over. My sister hung around for another day or so, it was the weekend. And then she had to go. And so we packed her things into the car, and packed our bodies into the car, as well, and started off on the 2-½ hour drive to Valencia. She goes to an art college there, for graphic design. She’s a cool art student with cool art student friends.
As we drove I flowed in and out of half-sleep, and in between stared out the window. Many thoughts passed through as I stared out the window. They walked by and said ‘Just passing through!’ and then left. I pondered the impracticability of modern transportation. For instance, the modern car. It is a single vessel, usually containing only 4 people, and apparently the louder, faster, and less fuel efficient it is, the better. I ponder this. So there is a moving vehicle, loud and fast and able to carry many pounds, and yet it only holds four people! Blasphemous! And as for the airplane, it is big and huge with big giant engines on each side that hurt your ears. And, while it can hold many more people than the typical car, it can never seem to stay on the ground! Planes always have horrible traction. Also, there are lots of big, evil people out there who want to bomb our planes and kill our children and us, because they hate our freedom. I know this because the president says so. But that factor is not so bad, because now we are safer, just not safe yet. The president also said this, right after the thing about evil people who are going to kill us all. Between the thoughts I stare into the smoke coming from the hillside. There is a huge fire somewhere, I have heard. I am not sure where exactly. It is very hard to spot a huge, flaming inferno. The smoke wanders up and plays with the sun. And now it looks like an alien sunset reflected in a firebombing, a storm front of ash and dust. The sun turns a surreal red-orange. It is the apocalypse. I am the last man on earth. I wander into my own little world.
Before I know it, we are in Valencia. Valencia is a nice little suburban area of L.A. There are lots of pretty stores and theme parks and gated communities in it with pretty cameras staring me in the eye and saying ‘hello!’ We arrive at my sister’s college. She does not want us there. She is like a grizzly bear. She says words. All I hear is ‘RAWR!’ Because bears make that sound. We all know that. She does not want us here, me, my mom, and my step-dad, because we are not cool art students. We say goodbye, and then we go 2-½ hours back. No thoughts this time. Just dreams and sleep. We get home, I am woken up, my butt hurts, my foot is numb, and I am like a grizzly bear.
