At first glance, the smiling owl mouse looks like a mixture between an owl, a potoo, and a rodent, coupled with a spotted coat of fur, and an eerily β€œsmiling” mouth. In actuality however, it turns out to be a winged mammal, closely related to bats.
Although the owl mouse is indeed nocturnal, and retains the wing membrane of its relatives, what sets it apart is that it has different wings proportions, a bipedal posture, lack of echolocation, and the aforementioned wide gaping mouth.
There were claims of such creatures with owl-like features that have been known to work together by luring trespassers with mimicry and then attacking them in a hunting method similar to piranhas. Of course, this was all just a mere myth; the real deal, the smiling owl mouse is a solitary hunter preying on smaller animals.
