Description
Version without tree shading and animation: Lazy DaysThis takes place between the time they first met and the spring-snakes prank.
Also, I plan to make a version with smoother animations when I am feeling better/have more time.
A soft breeze rustled the leaves of the oak tree that Amrbosia and Jack were leaned back against.
They sat in such a way that they weren't actually facing each other, but could turn to see the other's expressions if they felt like it. Ambrosia was taking advantage of that to sneak peaks at Jack anytime she thought he wouldn't be looking her way. She felt a little guilty since he had deliberately chosen to sit in this way to make her more comfortable- constantly facing others made her feel skittish- but she couldn't seem to help herself.
They had been talking about the whether and which kinds they liked- Jack, anything cold and clean; Ambrosia, anything that wasn't stormy- but had fallen into a silently agreed upon break from talking to just relax and enjoy the day. It was funny... but usually sitting in silence with someone would have made Ambrosia feel as though she were doing something wrong. When it was Jack though, it somehow just felt alright. Nice even.
During this intermission of their conversation though, Jack happened to glance at Ambrosia just as she glanced at him.
Starled to have made eye contact when she hadn't been expecting to and embarrassed that she had been caught looking at him, she turned her head back quickly and stretched her arms up and yawned. "I think I'll take a nap." She said, leaning back against the tree and closing her eyes.
"If you're tired, you should go home and rest." Jack said. He didn't seem upset by the momentary gaze they had shared, nor bothered by her flustered reaction. Really, he just sounded amused and somewhat worried. "I'm still not convinced you didn't get sick after falling into the pond."
"Ah, no. I'm fine, really. And I'd rather stay here." She said, feeling herself blush a bit and cracking one eye open to look back at him and make sure he wasn't seriously worried.
Her embarrassment was only doubled when she found he was watching her with an expression of wry amusement, completely void of any serious worry. His eyes said, 'That's right. I saw you, and I know that's why you're suddenly playing sleepy.'
She didn't want to admit to any of that though, so she stuck to her act. "It's just a nap." She said quietly, letting her head lull backwards to rest against the trunk.
"What if a storm stirred up? Or if someone came by and decided to poke you." He asked. It was asked with his teasing tone though. The one that had confused her often in these past few days, having at first taken everything seriously, but that she was getting used to.
"I trust you to keep me safe." She said without thinking, closing her eye again and relaxing her muscels. The fact that she had said something like that, when normally she was very mistrustful of others, should have set of some sort of alert in her head, but instead, she thought nothing of it and focused on trying to fall asleep.
Jack watched her with amusement for a moment- it was obvious she wasn't going to give up now- but he shrugged and let her play out her little 'deception'. It was cute. As she worked on falling asleep though, he gazed off at the clouds and wondered if there was anything behind how flustered she had gotten when he happened to see her look at him. It was probably just that she was very shy. She'd have done the same if it was anyone else.
While he was thinking about that, and other thoughts that followed, Ambrosia had actually managed to fall asleep and was slowly sliding down the trunk. Jack only noticed this though when her small frame gradually leaned up agaisnt his. He blinked and looked down at her, then chuckled softly. There was one danger he would not protect her from while she slept if she made herself such an easy target.
Carefully picking a few clovers that were within his arm's reach, he worked them into a small chain- not an easy task for most people, but with hands as nimble as his own, it was easy enough- then dangled that chain carefully over her nose, and wiggled it.
After a moment, she did exactly what he knew she would. She woke up sneezing, then started panicking and fretting when she realized she had been leaning on him. He only laughed at the way she worried so much about such a small thing, while hiding away the clover chain he had made.
It wasn't until later that night when Ambrosia was going to bed back on her own ranch, that she realized he had pulled a prank on her to wake her.
It was to be the first of many.
