Chapter Six: Suprise guestI sat at my table eating lunch. It had been two days since I read those files about us. I spun the fork around in the mashed potatoes. Suddenly the doorbell rang. I walked to the door in thought. I opened the door and was met by One and Two. One had a box in his hands and Two was trying to help horribly. I stared blankly at them.
“Can I help you two? I still haven’t recovered from that battle with the viruses.” I continued my stare.
“Tadashi told us we had to live with you. He wants all of us together. He already kicked us out of the lab.” One pouted.
“Great…” I complained.
“Please let us stay. Tadashi already made us leave and told us to come here.” Two gave me the girly eyes that flutter.
“That doesn’t work on me you know.” I told her. I lied. Airi always took me down in persuasion with that look. “Since you're already here with your stuff I’ll let you stay for a while. At least till I can talk to Tadashi.”
I picked up the cart of boxes left by my guess a moving company. I carried them in and laid them by the corner of the staircase. “Thank you for-.” Two tried to thank me.
“No softening me up. I have rules if you’re going to stay here got it?” I turned back.
“Got it.” They replied with a gulp.
“My rules list, no loud music or noises. No arguing! And clean up after yourselves! If I see a mess then you’ll get it. That and don’t mess with my stuff or lifestyle, you got your things I have mine understood?” I commanded with my arms crossed.
“Got it!” They repeated.
I grabbed a key to one of the two downstair rooms I never used. I turned the door and flipped the light switch. The fan buzzed to life and revealed a queen sized bed and a dresser with a mirror. I quickly opened the window and grabbed the bed sheets. “Two can stay in here.”
“Okay.” Two smiled and struggled to move a box. I picked it up and opened it with one of my claws.
“Any other boxes?” I asked.
“Just that other one.” She pointed to the next one on top. I repeated lifting and opening.
“I’m going to wash these sheets after I take one to his room. If you have trouble we’ll be across the hall.” I explained. I lead One directly across the hall and opened it without a key. It had a pull out bed-couch with a desk and computer along with a bookshelf. It had been my office of sorts and study area.
“Where’s the bed?” He asked.
“The couch folds out into one. I’ll get you a new bed just help me move out the bookshelf and the computer.” I sat his two boxes down on the couch.
“Move them where?”
“Help me move the bookshelf into the living room and the computer upstairs.” I walked to one end of the bookshelf. It wasn’t too heavy but I might as well get help before I make my wounds any worse. I have a brain inside my head! After an hour and a half of moving things around and making dinner I sat on the couch. It had to have been around ten or so.
“Prototype.” A small voice from among the hall came.
“Two? What are you doing up so late?” I asked.
“I can’t sleep. Is it okay if I stay out here with you?” She asked walking towards me. She sat at the end of the couch. She sat on my feet but I didn’t care. I put the book I was reading down in my lap.
“Why can’t you sleep?” I asked.
“It’s hard for me to. I sometimes don’t at all.” She explained, “I think I might be nervous too.”
“Fine, but you don’t have to be afraid of me or anything. I’m not going to let the viruses get to you.” I told her. She smiled slightly. She then looked at my book.
“What’s that about?” She asked me.
“It’s a murder mystery book.” I replied.
“M-murder?” She stumbled.
“Nothing to be afraid of. It’s not like I kill humans or anything. besides if someone busted in here they’d never make it to your room without me knowing. You’re safe.” I patted her shoulder.
“Okay.” She then squirmed her way into my lap.
“What are you doing!” I growled. I was nervous of the small girl near me.
“I just want to read with you.” She looked up.
I trembled. I only knew Airi. I only slept with her as a child and touched her where I should. But this girl was in my lap pressing against my skin. She was much younger then me and fragile. I didn’t know how to react due to my place in society. I took a breath and calmed down. I continued reading. I flipped the page and the next thing I knew she was out cold. I sighed and picked her up. I opened the door to her room and placed her in the sheets. I left the door cracked and returned to my room.
The next morning I awoke to the smell of eggs and bacon. I ran down stairs afraid that a fire had started. I was greeted by One and Two and thankfully no fire. Two was in my stir fry apron that was too big for her. One was sitting at the table reading one of my books. “What are you two doing?”
“Waiting on breakfast. Why do you read all these boring mystery books? It’s stupid.” One stretched out with a yawn.
“What happened to stick with your own lifestyle?” I slammed my hand down on the desk closing the book with one of my most intimidating glares and voice. He shrieked like a girl and fell out of the chair like I hoped he would.
“Um...I made breakfast.” Two whimpered. I looked up at her. Her hands were shaking. I scared her. Great now she won’t trust me.
“Oh that reminds me. I need to give you some names. I don’t like how you two are labeled off.” I looked at her with a smile.
“Names?” They asked.
“One your name is Kayato and Two is Shiria.” I pointed to each of them as I gave them their names.
“Where’d you come up with those?” Kayato asked unamused.
“So you like being called barcodes?” I asked him.
“No.”
“Then don’t be called One.” I told him. I knew I started something then. I hated that they didn’t know or remember what was going on. I knew somewhere there had to be a way to give them back their old selves so I gave them the one thing I could. I had already deleted the files I had downloaded so Tadashi had no proof that it wasn’t a coincident that I gave them their real names.
