Description Chapter Seventeen: Seeing Double

Proto finished zipping up a jacket and looked towards Ace. His eyes finally got use to the shades on his eyes. He had a few more weeks of wearing them to go. At least that’s what Tadashi said. He allowed them to take Shiria and kayato on a scouting routine. Ace had pulled a few strings to let Proto tag along even though he was off duty for now.

“This is so exciting! We get to have our first mission!” kayato cheered.

   “Yeah.” Shiria sighed.

“It’s alright Shiria. We’ve all felt that way.” Ace whispered into her ear knowing she was nervous. She nodded and couldn’t help but look to Proto for assurance though. They all had on black outfits that were heavy and thick armoured. Proto’s eye’s were faint through the shades but she could tell he was looking at her. She gave a small smile towards him. He gave a quick one back before he held a hand out to her. She took it and wrapped around his arm.

“It’s alright we’ll be fine it’s just recon.” Proto clutched her hand. She leaned against them as they teleported to their destination. They landed next to Ace and kayato who had already started looking around.

   “Hey slow pokes.” Ace grinned.

“Hey so how’s it going so far?” Proto asked as if they hid something from the kids.

“Nothing. Looks fine to me.” Ace shrugged. He stood up and dusted his hand off.

“Okay.” Proto looked around. Shiria started to look around.

“So what are we looking for anyway?” Shiria asked.

“If any viruses have tried to come around here.” Ace replied. Click click.

   “What was that?” Shiria asked.

“I don’t know.” Proto looked around. He turned towards Ace and nodded. Proto ran off into the brush.

“Get down.” Ace shooed them into a bush.

   “What’s going on?” Kayato asked.

“Proto is looking for what made that noise.” Ace said.

Proto walked down the path. A virus appeared out of nowhere.

“Great.” He raised a fist ready…

“I wonder what’s taking him so long.” Shiria started to panic.

“Don’t worry I’ll call-” Ace started to raise his watch to his face.

“No need for that.” Proto appeared through the brush.

“So what took you so long?” Ace asked.

“I found some viruses tracks and followed. I lost it though.” He grinned.

“You of all people losing a track.” Ace snickered. He stood up and placed his hands on his hips, “You must be getting old.”

Boom! Proto hit Ace. He grinned devilishly.

   “Proto!” Shiria yelled.

“What’s gotten into you?” Ace stood up. He noticed Proto’s shades were brighter than before as if being lit from behind.

“Ace!” A voice called. Another Proto came out of the brush stumbling around. He had his eyes closed and was beaten badly.

   “Two Protos?” Kayato looked.

“Great now we got to figure out which one’s the real one.” Ace grunted standing back up.

“I’m the real one!” The blind one yelled.

“How’d you get up virus and find your way here?” The first one asked stepping towards the second.

The second one grunted trying to hear the footsteps of the enemy. Ace looked at both of them. He noticed the second one had no watch or shades.

“He’s the fake.” Ace pointed at the second one.

“How do you know?” Kayato asked.

“He doesn’t have a watch or shades.” Ace charged. He knocked down the ‘fake Proto’ only to be swatted down by the second.

“You idiot he stole them.” The second Proto sat up, “I followed my own scent back up the trail.”

“You could’ve opened your eyes!” Ace yelled in his ears pushing him out the way from the virus’s blow.

“If I did that I’ll go blind!” Proto grunted he sat up from the fall.

“I don’t really trust you either right now.” Ace replied. Proto grunted and scratched himself on his cheek. Bam! Ace smacked Proto’s head as they dodged another blow, “What the hell is the matter with you?”

“Now can you tell the difference?” Proto ignored. He stood up dodging a blow to the face by an inch. He smashed his copy cat in the face.

“You’re blind. How?” The fake said.

“You took my form. You know my memories to cover yourself and since I’m making memories right now.” Proto kneeled over and pinned the fake down, “I can see you clear as day.” He flipped over the body and made a tumble roll lifting the fake up and flung him in the air, “Now Ace.”

“Got it.” Ace jumped into the air slashing the fake in the neck. Oil oozed out and the body fell to the ground changing back into the original virus form. Ace took off the glasses and watch and helped Proto put them back on.

“Thanks.” Proto adjusted the glasses. He grunted a little holding his stomach.

“What’s wrong?” Shiria and Kayato asked.

“He cut through the armour.” He revealed the cut off to the side that went in three piercing holes.

“Up you go.” Ace steadied the boy, “You keep getting beaten up lately haven’t ya?”

“Shut up. Babysitting is hard work.” Proto grunted. He knew he was lately. He’s been losing fights left and right. He couldn’t do much about it. There’s always been something wrong when he did get in a fight. Outnumbered, sick, injured, busy. Not like he could do much to fix those problems…

Tadashi sighed and fixed him up.

“You need to quit doing this to yourself.” He sighed.

   “I can’t help it.”

“I know that’s why we made replacements.”

   “I don’t need replacements.”

“You and I both know about it.”

   “Don’t go there.”

“You haven’t told the kids yet have you? How much longer do you expect them to not know?”

“They don’t need to know. And they won’t.” Proto whipped his head back in defiance.

“They will eventually.” Tadashi shook his head, “What about Ace? Does he know?”

   “No.”

“I’m going to place you and the children in his house then.”

   “What! Why?”

“I cannot have you in an upstairs room by yourself while we fix this. You need a caretaker incase something happens.” Tadashi sighed.

“I’ll be fine I have the kids. Even so I doubt Ace has room for us.”

“He has three story house with seven rooms all to himself with two baths.”

   “Well...I’ll still be fine.”

   “You’re dying.”

“I am not. Don’t say that. I have these kids to look after.”

“Proto you’re sick and the operation alone to fix it is dangerous I cannot allow you to work anymore or strain yourself.”

   “What about Airi?”

   “We’ll see to it.”

“I’m not going to quit till I get to see her.” Proto glared.

“I know you won’t but if you keep straining yourself you’ll only make your condition worse. Do you know how hard it is to clear a heart from virus’s metal?”

“I know it’s trying to clog my heart. And yes I know. I researched it.”

“Then take your leave and let Ace take care of the kids. You can’t do much for them without injuring yourself anymore.”

   “They don’t weigh me down.”

“You’re drowning trying to let them fly.”

   “It won’t happen.”

“It will now quit arguing with me.” Tadashi growled he quickly turned on the sleeping gas in the oxygen tank and put Proto to sleep, “Ace.” Tadashi called through his phone.

   “Yeah?”

“I need you to do me a favor.”

   “What’s that?” Ace asked...
