been sketching up some possible corrupt designs because it's fun. I really liked this idea for how a corrupted opal fusion could look, so I made it into a full design.

So apparently there is a canon corrupted pearl in one of the Steven Universe games (Lonely Pearl.) I miiight be wrong about that as I haven't played the game, but I'm at least... pretty sure. Anyways I like that corrupted pearls look like moths, it's pretty neat. So even if that isn't the canon corrupted pearl design, it is in my headcanon.

With my understanding on how corruption works, I imagine corrupted Gems are predisposed to be resistant to fusing - with exceptions depending on the Gem (like rubies maybe or whatever the Gems that made up the big bird from the "Giant Woman" episode were.) The corruption's effect on their minds just makes it harder for the corrupted Gems to harmonize well for very long if at all, especially so for cross-gem fusions. That's not to say it's impossible for them to exist, it's just very difficult and would almost always require an already strong bond between the Gems pre-corruption.

That is why I didn't use the Crystal Gems Pearl and Amethyst for this Opal, as they're not nearly in sync enough to fuse if they were in a corrupted state. And instead I just made up my own Opal. Which was very fun. Her components are a blue quartz (maybe dumortierite quartz?) and a lavender pearl, and they're best friends, hell yeah.

Random side tangent: I don't know if only an amethyst and a pearl make an opal, or if any quartz and a pearl make an opal. But I'm just going to tentatively go with the "any quartz + pearl makes an opal" option, because it's simple and I feel like it makes enough sense. (As much sense as two gems fusing and making a entirely unrelated gem type together makes in the first place.) No one wondering why Pearl and "Rose Quartz" formed Rainbow Quartz instead of an opal when fused can just be chocked up to fusion still being new and largely unknown during that time.
