- Kalikants burrow their nests deep into the earth, only surfacing on the darkest of nights - lured by their insatiable desire to pester the world above. Many Mythoan households own fire-type Pokemon to keep the mischievous Kalikants at bay.
- A single Kalikant is capable of digging a mile-long tunnel within a single day. These tunnels, however, aren’t very structurally sound, and always cave in the moment Kalikant stops attending to it.
- (bonus extra long lore entry) There is a legend that Kalikants dig so fervently because they are attempting to dig a tunnel long and wide enough for their queen to emerge from her chamber, close the earth’s core. It’s said that her emergence would bring about an eternal darkness over the Earth... Though there's no evidence supporting this myth, many residents of Mythoa will traditionally place berries and other distractions out at night to lure as many Kalikants away from their work as possible, ensuring that this tunnel never is completed.

Based on the Kallikantzaroi (particularly the Greek folklore of them) and ants (funnel ants in particular -- especially Aphaenogaster balcanicoides design-wise). With a little touch of velvet ant as well in the design, which technically aren't ants. They're also based on that trope of the big-bad's minions being incompetent and easily thwarted. I wanted Kalikants to come across more like a mischievous, little annoyance than a malicious threat.

I learned of Kallikantzaros from my mom, who grew up in Crete with stories of the methods her family had every New Year's to deal with them. I only recently made the connection that Kallikantzaroi could easily be combined with ants for a fakemon. Did you know Durant is currently the only ant Pokemon? And as much as I love Durant, I can't help but feel like there's more room to explore with the concept of an ant Pokemon. Combining the features of ants - small creatures who emerge from working underground and sneak into homes, highly food motivated, with these small, impish creatures who emerge from working underground to sneak into homes, highly food motivated, was an incredibly easy fit.

It all came together really seamlessly from there (even the name was very easy to come up with.) This is honestly one of my favorite Fakemon I've designed yet. The hardest part was picking the abilities, as I could see more than just 3 fitting well (Pickpocket, Gluttony, Unnerve - heck I was even tempted to give them Truant as the hidden ability.)

Will the rumored queen of the Kalikants get a design? ....maybe.. I have ideas, but I also feel like keeping her a complete and ominous mystery works better.
