Description This isn't really a tutorial, but rather a list of steps I went through to achieve troll handsomeness.

1. Under-drawing. I always do a sketch. I try to keep certain styles in mind. I was thinking about the mad hatter's nose from Alice in Wonderland when I drew this, but I also wanted him to be sexy. I always draw my eyes bulbous, but whatever your style is, is good. I think in circles, circle head, circle eyes, circle nose. I also think about bone structure; how big do I want his cheek bones, how big do I want his jaw.

2. On a separate layer, I just take a regular brush and fill in the skin, then I drop the opacity down so I can see what I'm looking at. I drop in the basic colors of his hair and basic shadows. Then I see what skin texture might look like with one of those sponge brushes. I'm constantly dropping opacity whenever I add another color so I can still see the drawing underneath. Sometimes, I'll darken features on a new layer on top of everything. I also try out different brushes at this stage so I can find out what kind of look I'm going for.

3. Here, I realized that his hair didn't have enough volume and it made it look like his skull ended behind his bangs. I added more of the sponge texture to his skin to give it a porous look. I started darkening shadows and playing with light. On his eyes in particular, his eyelids would cast a shadow on the eyeball. The eyeball also wouldn't be completely white, because unless it's a reflection, 'nothing in nature is completely white'. Nothing in nature is completely black, either, but fuck that. For the pearls, I started with a dark blue. Then, I looked up pictures of black pearls on google. They're actually really simple to paint: Blue circles, light brown reflection on the bottom, light green reflection on the top, bright white specular highlight, and then a touch of black around the lower left side.

4. I used a fuzzy brush that is most likely in anyone's photoshop brushes to make his necklace look fluffy. For the eyes, I noticed that not only do eyes have a bright white specular highlight, but there's usually and underlying softer reflection. One thing that helps me with eyes, is watching CG cartoons. Despicable Me in particular has some great eyes....also Monster's Inc. I bumped the cheek bones, nose, chin, boobs, and forehead up with some white and dropped the opacity. I did the same with all the shadows. I feel this aged him considerably, but oh well...it was a learning process.

Anyhow...hope this helps or.....something.
