Ice clung to his fur. This was a new feeling, unwelcome and foreign. The wind howled and tugged against the esk's fur, as if trying to tear him apart.
The air was hostile.
His eyes were squinted so hard against the wind they were nearly closed, his world now just a haze of snow and ice. Parchment dug his heels into the loose rock as a stronger gust buffeted him back.
He missed the forest.
The land here was baren in comparison - bleak. Frost clung to every plant and stone, and the blizzard was so bad not another soul dared go out in it. As he continued his uphill struggle into the wind he wondered why he was even here. Parchment felt strange. There was an ache inside that would not go away, and that doubled down with every step.
, "It is stolen. Return it to me."
The words still rang in his head. The stone shone ahead of him, a beacon through the snow. Hovering above the ground, he only had to nudge it forward every few feet and it took care of the rest. There was something that needed him, needed his help. And no matter how hard the journey was ahead, he was going to take this to them.
