Description
Also known as Kresh, the Beefcake-ed. For the ladies, (and fellas,) who like's them a manly man.Believe me, it takes hours in a make up chair to get that blood-smeared, sweat-glisteny, but casual, "just killed me a small army" look. And the diet is strictly Alaran whole-grains and raw dragonmeat. But when it comes time to crush all in your path as a tidal wave of sinewy muscle, it's worth every rep, every skipped brownie.
So, I've mentioned before, (if you're an uber-fan who actually reads this stuff,) that when I'm stuck on a design, I usually look to something absolutely unrelated. You know, stuff like pictures of jellyfish for mech designs and such. And once I point it out, you can't un-see it. For example, this guys spikey shield-thing? Turtle. He's got a turtle on his arm. I'm sure there's some deep symbolism in that, if I cared to BS some up.

Thanks! I should post that here. There's more that didn't make the cut, plus the picture was cropped a bit.

I've been considering building an EDH deck around him as well. Seems like a great general.

He is pretty great. Big target though, but thats part of the charm. Opponents tend to target him instead of your other creatures.

Wow...
Kresh the Beefcake-ed.
I don't know if the details of the actual piece had me smiling more or the description. I do know, however, that I'll have to skip the local tavern and head over to this Wiggly Joe's for my eye candy from now on. ^.^

You will often find Kresh there, gazing longingly at the genetically-altered desert cupboard.

The turtle... Now it's there every time I look at his arm!!! Really cool though o.o I'll keep that advice in mind for whenever I'm stuck xD

Wh-...He has BODY HAIR?!? WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? You've broken the golden rule! Everyone knows that testosterone causes skin to become shiny and devoid of follicles! And what nature leaves behind, EVERY good Barbarian WAXES AWAY with his EXTENSIVE AND DILIGENT PERSONAL GROOMING! This must be some sort of mistake!
...Joking aside, it is a refreshing change of pace to see some man-fur. Nice turtle, too.

Oh, ouch... He'd have to be a manly man to survive that divesting. Just the mental imagery and sound makes me cringe.

I think you're confused...
Steroids causes skin to become shinny and devoid of follicles. Oo That and mass amounts of primping in the estrogen saturated salon while pretending to ogle the ladies but being unable to not look at oneself.
Testosterone creates manly men that use hairless Ambercrombie models for shields from raining arrows. ^.^

Jellyfish for mechs? Really? That's really cool, what aspects about them help when drawing machinery?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SteveArgyle In reply to Dornyth [2011-11-29 20:03:16 +0000 UTC]
The idea is basically that you look for ways to incorporate the visually distinct elements from something that is typically nowhere close to your subject. If you're stuck on mechs, and all you look at is other drawings of mechs, it could turn out dull and generic. But with something like a jellyfish, you'd say to yourself "Hey, I could have these multiple, translucent shells for the body/armor-plates, maybe a flared tendril cooling system." That kind of thing.

Well, why wouldn't he have a turtle on his arm? I do. Don't you?
The real question is how much time does he spend grooming his chest hair every morning?

SteveArgyle In reply to Treyos [2011-11-29 20:04:22 +0000 UTC]
Brush, pomade, blow-dried for that war-tussled look: about twenty minutes.

He definitely does! I feel like I have a target painted on me sometimes when I play that deck, cause they (my family that plays) know what happens if they wait too long to take me out!

It was ridiculous, I know that. Kresh + Fling is just hilarious.
Another good friend of mine used him as his Commander in EDH and that deck wasn't bad at all either.
Love your stuff, man. Chandra Ablaze was the background on my Droid for months.

Mostly just Photoshop, with pretty standard brushes. Nothing super exciting.

Do you use a mouse or a tablet? Seems like a silly question but I've seen some pretty amazing stuff done with a mouse.
I can't believe I'm actually talking to Steve freakin' Argyle! Lol...

Tablet. Definitely tablet. For 3D, I guess I don't need one, but for painting and sketching, I think I'd be pretty slow with a mouse.

I'm sure you'll agree that there are many great artists that work with Wizards of the Coast, but you are easily in my top 5. Admonition Angel and Slave of Bolas are great, but your Naya Battlemage just blew me away.
How long have you been doing this? How did you get started? (I hope all these questions aren't bugging you, by the way.)
Do you have any tips for someone new to scratch images in Photoshop? I'm a graphic arts major but most of what I've done has been simple color corrections, layouts, etc, with very little design. Here's one of my first ever.

If you prefer to email, I can do that just as easily. Let me know!
