Very Cool. I have been referencing for a while and looking for some more input on hands, but there is nothing like seeing someone do it. WHILE watching this vid I was following with awesome progress. I'll post some sketches soon on my page. Thanks man!

I think watching someone else apply the concepts you can read about, and then going back and doing it yourself actually helps more.

A piece of bread! Genius! Who knew?! Now I am seeing hands they way art books teach, as 3D rectangles (oh and how Marge Simpson started to see her paintings). And that's just dandy for me seeing as I'm an engineer by trade and work lots with 3D.
I'm fighting with myself to sketch out block hands fast. It's a great way to make meetings more interesting!
Cheers! Thanks so much.

Thank you for doing this short tutorial. I was the kind of person who liked to do outlines, but later found out how out of proportion they are. I believe your demonstration set me on a better direction to draw hands. I'll try the claw thing (that looks very handy). Thank you so much!

Thank you so much! Drawing hands is what's most difficult for me, so I just tend to make my characters stand with their arms behind their back or something. That's so LAME! This video helped more than any other tutorial I've read so far. I need to see someone do it before I can try by myself, so thank you very much for making this.
Now I'll go draw some hands.

those claw things look cool. Hey Mr Sanchez, is there any difference in the way u draw female hands as opposed to male hands? du make the female ones thinner or sumthing or does it not really matter for you?

Get some online references and see what makes them different. dissect them and see why men and women differ from style. That should help.

Dude, awesome tutorial. I hate drawing hands and usually do the mitten thing for my roughs. (Box hand including fingers then a offshoot for a thumb) This will definitely inspire me to do some more research and apply different techniques. Thanks!

StevenSanchez In reply to Chameleon-Drei [2008-06-25 13:28:55 +0000 UTC]
Usually work on the stuff you don't like 'cause that way you'll begin to understand it more. Sort of like being stuck with someone you don't like, give it enough time, you'll find something in common

Chameleon-Drei In reply to StevenSanchez [2008-06-25 19:35:22 +0000 UTC]
Wow thanks man, you're right. Instead of avoiding it and never nailing the technique, I should just face it head on and get it out of the way so I can tackle bigger issues. (Like faces for instance XD) And thanks for your input so quickly it real cool to get advice from artists.

Ah, I'm guilty of the whole overworking the sketch thing. I'm trying to get better at it.
You're so right about just doing your homework and not giving up. Since I'm in college for animation now, I realize that I really need to branch out on what I draw. I've been so used to just drawing animals and I've never really practiced drawing people and whatnot. I've only just recently started drawing more people and it's so hard. I figured it was because no one ever taught me but that's a load of bull. There are plenty of amazing self taught artists out there who can draw anything and everything, so I have no excuse. I've just gotta study human anatomy, take a figure drawing class here and there and just work at it. And I've got to be more relaxed with my sketching.
I've never noticed the square thing until you pointed it out. That might work for me.
Also, kudos for being so blunt and straightforward. No one really does that (possibly for fear of upsetting their fans). But people need to hear the truth, no matter what profession they're in.

That makes things easier, but the hardest part about hands is how unpredictable the fingers can be.
