Description Let me tell you a little about the truck driver you just flipped off because he was passing another truck, and you had to cancel the cruise control and slow down until he completed the pass and moved back over. His truck is governed to 68 miles an hour, because the company he leases it from believes it keeps him and the public and the equipment safer. The truck he passed was probably running under 65 to conserve his fuel. You see, the best these trucks do for fuel economy is about 8 MPG. At almost $4.00 per gallon, well, you do the math. And yes, that driver pays for his own fuel. The load he's under needs to be 1014 miles from where he loaded in 2 days. And he cannot fudge his federally mandated driver log because he no longer does it on paper, he is logged electronically. He can drive 11 hours in a 14 hour period, then he must take a 10 hour break before resuming driving. And considering the shipper where he loaded held him up for 5 hours because they are understaffed, he now needs to run without stopping for breaks to make his delivery appointment. If he misses it, he will be rescheduled for the next day, because the receiver has booked their docks solid, as they have cut their staff to a minimum. That means the driver sits, losing 500+ miles for the week. Which means his profit will be cut, and he will take less money home to his family. Most of these guys are gone 10 days, and home for a day and a half, and take home an average of $500.00 a week if everything goes well.

You can't tell by looking at him, but 2 hours ago he took a call informing him that his only sister was involved in a car accident, and though everything possible was done to save her, she died. They had flown her to a trauma hospital in Detroit, but it was too late. He hadn't seen her since last Christmas, but they talked on the phone every week. The load he is pulling is going to Atlanta, and he will probably not be able to get to the funeral. His dispatcher will do everything possible with the loads available from Atlanta to get him there, but the chances are slim. So he has hardly noticed your displeasure at having to slow down for him. It's not that he doesn't care, he's just numb.

Everything you buy at the store, everything you order on-line, moves by truck. Planes and trains can't get it to your house or grocery store. We are dependent on trucks to move product from the airport, the rail yards, to the stores and our homes. Every day good, experienced, qualified drivers give it up because the government, the traffic, and the greedy companies involved in trucking have drained their enthusiasm for this life. They take a job at a factory if they can find it, and are replaced by an inexperienced youngster dreaming of the open road. This inexperience leads to late deliveries, causing shortages and higher prices at the store, and crashes that lead to unnecessary deaths on the road. It is even possible that is what led to the death of this driver's sister.

how did you know someone flipped the bird at him though?

Because I drove truck for 30 years, and it happened to me almost every day.

Harold probably told him, considering they are friends and he is his dispatcher.
Most probably Harold got to where he needed to get and he probably called his dispatcher and they probably talked a bit, and Harold probably mentioned that someone flipped him off.
The writer/dispatcher, with this information, choose to write it in present predicate. So it happened in the past but he's writing it in a way that it's kinda in the moment.

That's what I think happened. But it's probably what most likely happened

Sad, informative, and well written. I get nervous just driving a car, and I can't imagine controlling such a big vehicle. Thanks to you and other truckers for getting stuff where it needs to be!

Well written ^_^ This kind of does bring to mind that, while while we all do have problems in our lives, so does everyone else, so we should try to be more patient with each other no matter how irritated we get. Great job!

Well written, but sadly, very self-righteous sounding. Yeah, I know, I'm going to catch flack for it, but that is in my mind as I'm reading it. I can't feel or appreciate it because it comes off as being preachy--everyone has problems. The person who just flipped the truck off because of having to slow down might have been on their way to the hospital to see their cancer-ridden father one last time as he lay dying. Unfortunately, this is the way the world is--but this is also well-written because it still elicited an emotional response.

I appreciate your comment, and understand your interpretation. Last October, on the 60 mile drive to my dad's house, I had to slow for big trucks twice. I was lucky though, and arrived an hour before my dad died. He was, by the way, a retired truck driver. And if the big trucks in my way would have kept me from being there, he would have understood.

Your hypothetical (for why someone flipped him off) makes no sense at all. And flak is spelled without a 'c.' Sorry, that was bugging the speller in me.

Also, what's with the contradiction:

I can't feel or appreciate it...

...is also well-written because it still elicited an emotional response.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Original-RPer In reply to Nichrysalis [2013-02-06 11:13:37 +0000 UTC]

Actually no. "Flak" is in the Urban dictionary. Slang is a wonderful thing.

As for the "contradiction" let me add in a word.

"I can't /truly/ feel or appreciate it..."

Glad to see your defense for this is just picking out mistakes. That really endears me to the piece all the more. As for my hypothetical not making sense--you're absolutely right. No one has ever been in an emotional state or been so upset as to cause them to do stupid or rude things while driving.

My mistake.

Nichrysalis In reply to The-Original-RPer [2013-02-06 12:39:26 +0000 UTC]

Flak refers to anti-aircraft fire, which is where it is derived from. That's why the phrase is "catch flak" or "get flak."

It really wasn't as much as defending the piece as me trying to understand your comment (besides the typo).

Yes, preachy. Nothing drives me crazy more than that. Like "you're a bad person if you do/don't do this or that" and I hate feeling guilt where it shouldn't be.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Original-RPer In reply to KuchikiYorume [2013-02-06 04:43:02 +0000 UTC]

Which is fine, if I know ahead of time what I'm getting into, you know? If I know I'm about to read something about how I'm polluting the environment, then yeah, it's fine. But this sounds, essentially, like a list of issues someone has with a trucking business which then turns into a long list of why we should feel sorry for this person instead of feeling bad about our own lives.

I know! I hate invalidation more than anything else. I mean, is a person with, say, High Functioning Autism and Depression expected to pretend that she is okay just because it's "wrong" to be sad because children in Africa are starving?

That thought did go through my mind, everyone has something they are going through time to time, we should all take into consideration that fact and do our best to treat everyone with respect, and help one another when we can, even with a smile, just to help cheer someone up.

Oh, and sorry about the lack of flack, our flack cannons were bombed by a recent air raid...

This is so sad but well written.

People get to angry with driving and every day crap to care about people.
I feel i can relate on some level of people's capacity for empathy because Personally, i cant help but think about a stranger and who they may be when i just pass them in the street or something.
I guess im just wondering what the heck is going on in everyones head so i honestly try to get by without taking any of my own problems or such on people cuz i certainly dont know whats going on in their own worlds and lives.

You know, this really made me stop and think. When you're on the road, it does look a bit pointless when lorries pass each other. It's too easy to forget that those extra 3mph could add up to another 30+miles by the end of a driving day, and the difference between making your appointment or not.

Thanks for putting up Harold's story and introducing us to the hardships drivers have to deal with. My respect for them has just gone up a whole lot.

Thank you for writing this. I will be a bit more mindful the next time I get mad at big trucks for their 'elephant races'. They're not doing it to piss people off or to be jerks, but because there are a lot of vehicular restrictions and rules, and the people driving those big rigs are people just like you and me.

StormBringer23 In reply to windfalcon [2013-02-06 19:58:11 +0000 UTC]

Agreed, just like you and me. The lack of compassion for each other on the road reflects our lack of compassion in society. Not just truckers, everyone.

Aw, poor Harold. Now, I'm not trying to say anything bad about truckers, I'm honestly not, but I find this slightly ironic because just the other day I was sitting in my car, at a stoplight and to my right there was a truck and the driver was rocking out to the radio, windows down, dancing and singing along. He promptly caught sight of me, flipped me off, then RAN THE RED LIGHT AND DROVE AWAY!!! I'm definitely not saying all truckers are like this, I'm sure most of them are decent honest people, I just find this a little ironic.

You did a wonderful job with this. I didn't realize that they made so little. I know the job doesn't pay that good and I heard they had to pay their own gas but still.
I'm amazed anyone would want to be a trucker. Than I meet a couple older gentlemen at a truck stop restaurant in my home town and realize, at least a little bit, why.

I hope Harold is doing ok. Its hard loosing a family member, especially one that you are pretty close to.
